PNG have had the Hunters in the Q cup for 9 years. For 9 years there's been a direct pathway to the NRL in PNG .
How many have made NRL? Not many I can think of off the top of my head.
For a PNG team to work I think we need to be seeing at least 10 players come through to NRL or the PNG NRL team is either using Q cup standard players or the entire team will be full of foreigners and based in a foreign country. That's a bit silly.
If the Australian government wants to put 20 million into PNG, that money could be far better spent in the country improving facilities, training, nutrition and pathways.
Do that for 10 years, get those foundations right and talent coming through, then sure let's give them a team.

The NRL will be averaging in the 20k's in the next decade. However, build PNG a 40,000 seat stadium and there'll be 40,000 fans every week even if they're running dead last. How much they'll pay for a ticket is another question though...

I question whether they could make up for it in rich sponsorships. Just because there are rich mining operations in PNG, I don’t believe they would get value out of sponsoring a NRL team to the tune of fortunes.

3. The team could be based in Fiji
4. Easier to attract players to fiji
5. Viability already proven with SR side.
6. Commercially more viable with decent sponsorship opportunities.
7. Better gate takings with a bigger economy with people having more money to spend

Out of curiosity I thought I'd see how a PNG/Pacific team partly based in Brisbane might work in a 20 team comp. I called them the Pacific Crocodiles just for the sake of it and any home game against a QLD team I scheduled to be played in Brisbane. In the end it was 8 games in Port Moresby, 7 in Brisbane and a Gold Coast game.

The super rugby side isn’t viable

the governing body is covering their losses and doesn’t know how much longer it can cover it

I think they asked world rugby for extra money

I’m not so sure about that. People said the same about the Hunters, look at photos of their home games and their 15k stadium is lucky to be half full most games. I assume ticket prices come in to this, would they go very cheap and try and get as many in as possible? or do what every other NRL club does and try and find a balance that makes them the most money week to week.

Their crowds would still be better than most I’m sure, depending on the size of the stadium they build/upgrade.

Why are they playing a game out of GC and 7 more in Brisbane? Why not just all out of PNG?

Imagine the hubris of needing the Aust Govt to fully fund the total running costs of a side but claim it will have the largest corporate sponsorship in the NRL??

And imagine for a second if, in some alternate universe, this came to pass?

Imagine the political damage that a team that runs off Aus tax payer dollars, but wipes their arses with $100 notes would cause?

How about this radical idea? If they truly believe they will have the biggest corporate sponsorship in all of Australian team sports, why not use those monies to subside the entire teams operation?

The PNG government has effectively nationalised all major mining operations in the country, so they would be sponsoring themselves.
