Maybe I'll end up being wrong but even if the PNG team can offer 20% more on wages to players I just can't see them ever being able to attract the players to become more competitive than a bottom four side to be honest.

First, from a commercial standpoint the PNG team will want a large amount of star PNG players involved in the team and the only player involved that fits that level would be Xavier Coates. The rest of the PNG national team (Or former representatives) are all older guys and don't really fit the keyword for "star player".

Second, when it does become time to go to the open market what kind of player will want to pack up and move to a developing nation? Lets use Latrell Mitchell as an example, make a million bucks a season in Sydney where he has mates, family, can dip off back home when he wants etc or make 1.2 million a season playing in Papua New Guinea? For me the only players they will attract are those from PNG or those with strong ties to PNG, apart from that they'll sign the guys not good enough for NRL who were probably Super League bound anyway and even then most people would prefer London or Perpignan to Port Moresby.

Depends how good the facilities are for them they build. If its 6 star resort quality then spending 9 months in PNG for 20%-30% more pay may be something younger players without families will give a go.

Be interesting to see if they can keep players for any decent period of time, or if they can hold on to any decent PNG players that come through. All 19 clubs will be fishing in the same ponds.

Qld cup players are stars in png

They would show up to watch any random league player that most people on the east coast would have no idea who he is

“I don't have an issue with the premise of the deal, I do have an issue with the person that come up with it being an NRL super fan and funding the entire sports expansion in the Pacific and lining the pockets of every club in the entire NRL competition in the meantime though.

It's a facade to give the competition the leg up it needs to match the afl as Australia's biggest sport. No different to the streaming rights loophole albo just so happened to come up with, after his regular lunch catch up with PVL.“

This is a joy to read

Sounds like someone in getting in early with excuses for the new NRL deal.

No one is moving their family up there. They should develop a decent team though

Think superleague PNG players is the best place to start then QLD Cup/NSW cup guys wanting a shit and will probably have a decent chunk of cash to throw at a few blue sky targets.
Be interesting to see who they can realistically get from that last category though

Pirates is a decent name if WA don’t wanna use it- is there actually any piracy history there though? I’d assume a slightly more PNG centric name if not though

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/papua-new-guinea-travel-advisory.html#:~:text=Piracy%20is%20active%20in%20the,Guinea's%20north%20and%20eastern%20coasts.
Piracy is active in the waters surrounding Papua New Guinea. Travelers by boat should reconsider travel to the Bismarck and Solomon Seas along Papua New Guinea's north and eastern coasts
