poker machine tax

assuming it goes through (as you'd think it will now), do you think the consequences on rugby league teams are being exaggerated? namely, 7 sydney clubs having to fold/relocate?

i for one think it is a massive exaggeration, and i'd be surprised if more than one club had to relocate, at the very most two.

I tend to think this reeks of a scaremongering campaign, aimed to play at the heartstrings of passionate league fans. The clubs are doing this for leverage in keeping their pots of gold in tact.

I'd be interested to hear what others think.

Is this poker machine tax going to decimate Rugby League as NSW Clubs would have us believe, or are the ramifications of such a tax far less.

does poker machien tax prevent gambling in any way?

It might, but I doubt it was intended to do so ;-)

The theory goes this way.

The more Pokies a Business has the higher the Tax payable will be (in 7 or so years), up to a point where, apparently, if a business has so many machines the could be taxed to a point where that many machines may (or or may not be) unprofitable to run.

This could result in less Poker Machines.

now, this gets debatible ;-)

Less machines = less gambling due to a smaller crossover between money being gambled on pokies and other forms of gambling. (aka - housewives and little old ladies are less likely to blow their money on the Races or over the Tables at a casino.)

yes, there will still be plenty of machine left but overall if there are less poker machines available then less money will be lost on them (hopefully), and with a bit of luck the money that would of gone on the pokies won't go on other forms of gambling :D (yes, that would be a good thing)
