Guildford Leagues Club have dispanded their Rugby League Team and will not compete in the Jim Beam Cup. Reason given on 2GB was the forthcoming Poker Machine Tax :(

Media beat up.

The tax is staged over several years and they wouldn't be feeling the effect for a while yet. If they are already feeling the pinch I would suggest they were in difficulties before.

The SMH says today that a few ex-RL players may run against Labor in their safe seats, like George Piggins in Bob Carr's seat of Maroubra.

The bloke couldn't run a footy club, let alone a state.

They say Mark Geyer might stand in Penrith, too.

If people like Mark Geyer and George Piggins are going to become State MP's, I'll move to Queensland , hell I'll even move to Victoria.

Nah, they won't get in. It will be just the No Aircraft Noise party in that single issue parties can't win lower house seats.

Being in QLD I do not follow NSW politics too closely.

I do have a question, has the NSW opposition come out and said they will reverse, roll-back, however you want to term it, this tax if voted in?????

If not someone needs to get them on board otherwise what does it matter when voting??

Mark Geyer has been rubbing shoulders with John Brogden (Liberal Party leader) if thats any indication.

They just spend 10million in renovations on a new gaming facility but can't find the money to fund a football team.
I'm all the way with Mr Automobile on this pokie tax, It's really time to give back to the community.

I follow Guildford and the facts Egan has been presenting in relation to the clubs withdrawl from the Jim Beam Cup are very misleading.
Guildford undertook expensive renovations for the benefit of their members before the pokie tax was proposed, not knowing that this tax would come into play.
These renovations mean Guildford has debts to pay off over the coming years and this tax has placed them in a very bad financial position.
Guildford can simply not affort to support a football side of a level such as the Jim Beam Cup and pay off their debts at the same time, hence their withdrawl from the Jim Beam Cup.
I have followed Guildford in the Jim Beam Cup all year and am very dissapointed about the withdrawl. Its a great club with a strong history and a strong community spirit.
Please all rugby league fans help getting rid of this tax. Fact is it will impact upon rugby league heavily and damage our great game to a huge extent.
Save rugby league, Axe the tax!

They also posted a $10 million pokie profit last financial year.....

blaming the govt tax for them getting rid of their league team is convenient, and grossly wrong.

I think Ray Hadley said the upgrade to the club was at around $5 million, give or take a few hundred grand. Of course, the clubs couldnt be feeling the pinch of this so soon, not for another year IMHO though I'd imagine that it would have eventually killed it. He was not a happy camper. As much as I despise him, I despise the ALP even more, and shit like this annoys me more. I am disgusted and ashamed that I have attended the same school as Michael Egan.

If and by the time the right people are elected (3.5 years!) it will all be too late.

Guildford funded/supported 19 junior league clubs, and a number of other non-league sports. Will this see the end of Newtown Jets (   ) in Beam Cup too? Shit like this has axed clubs from the ARL and top level league, it should not ruin it for the young blokes having a dig at it.

ALP hang your heads in shame.

Guildford only recorded a net profit of $660 000 last year.
your figure must not consider all the costs involved and funding of sporting clubs.
The new tax is going to cost them an extra 300 000 next year and more in the years following.
Therefore Guildford can not afford to field a side in the Jim Beam Cup next year.
If they were they would only have $60 000 lee way and would put them in a risky and unstable financial position.
And the following year they wouldnt be able to afford to fund a side so there is not really a use in entering a team next year.
