Balmain v Newcastle
Saturday, 2.30pm
Leichhardt Oval

If ever Newcastle was a chance to upset the Tigers, this is it. The Knights will be on a high after disposing of the Bulldogs in last wek's boilover. They face a Tigers side reeling after three straight losses. Of course the Tigers will be bolstered by new signing Luke Branighan, whose experience should trouble the Knights.

------

Dragons v Bulldogs
Saturday 3.30pm
WIN Stadium

This is the match of the round. Both sides are form teams coming off losses last week. The Bulldogs were shocked by Newcastle while the Dragons lost to the high flying Sea Eagles. This should be a win for the Dragons. They're form all year has impressed and they should lift for the home crowd. By contrast, the Bulldogs have not hit the heights of the past year.

------

Cronulla v Roosters
Saturday 5.30pm
Toyota Park

The Sharks, coming off the bye, face a Roosters side that will be pleased after their win over the Tigers last week. This match should provide two points to the Roosters, who have a weakened PL line up compared to recent times. Look out for badboy Chris Walker, who will be trying to get back on track after some personal problems.

------

Souths v Newtown
Saturday 5.30pm
Express Advocate Stadium, Gosford

The Bunnies take this home match on the road. The local derby will be a curtan raiser to the Rabbitohs-Cowboys NRL match. Last time these teams met the Bunnies snatched victory with a last minute try to former Jet Nathan Marles. Since then the Jets have improved considerably as have Souths, who beat the Cougars last week. Souths go into the match favourites and to win, the Jets will have to counter a poor away record as well as hang on in the 2nd half, something that has proved a weakness for the Jets in 2004

------

Wests v Canberra
Sunday 12.40pm
Campbelltown Stadium

It is a quick turnaround for these clubs. This is a rematch just one week after their previous clash. In that match, the Magpies blew an early lead, losing easily to the radiers 42-24. The result epitomises the Maggies performance all year. They will have to play for 80 minutes if they are to be at all a challenge to the impressive Radiers.

------

Parramatta v Norths
Sunday 1.00pm
Parramatta Stadium

The final match of the round features the Eels at home to the Bears. A virus depleted Bears lost last week to Newtown while the Eels had the bye. While the Eels should win this match, you can never discount the Bears. Their ticker and their attacking options in Maclean and Black means that the Eels cannot be complacent against Norths. Parra have a lot of NRL experience though and this should prove crucial in the second half.

Balmain 36 - 22 Newcastle
Saints 26 - 20 Dogs
Sharks 14 - 22 Roosters
Souths 18 - 16 Jets
Wests 28 - 26 Canberra
Parra 46 - 18 Norths

------

Star signigng Luke Branighan put Balmain's season back on track, starring in a 36-22 win over the Knights at Leichhardt Oval. The former Saint had been a class above the rest in the Jim Beam Cup for Cabramatta. Saturday, he showed what he is capable of at a more reputable level of football scoring twice and orchestrating many other tries. It is expected that he will get an NRL call up as State of Origin takes its toll on the Wests Tigers Scott Prince.

------

The Saints maintained their good form with a hard fought 26-20 win over the Bulldogs at WIN Stadium on Saturday night. Again the Bulldogs stumbled in front of credible opposition. It was an important win for the Saints. It keep them within striking distance of Manly and the Cougars. Also since the side will be weakened in the coming weeks as the Dragons Origin players fulfil their duties and PL stars take their place in NRL, any point they can get now are more valuable.

------

The Sharks poor home form continued as they lost 22-14 to the Sydney Roosters. The win conslidates the Roosters spot in the the 8 as the Shakrs continue their poor form.

------

Newtown succumbed to another loss to local rivals Souths in the dying minutes. Leading 10-0 at half time and 16-12 with 10 minutes to go, the Jets couldn't hang on as yet again, a Rabbitohs try in the closing stages gained them two points. Newtown have struggled in the second half all year and this was yet another mental lapse for the Jets.

------

Wests exacted revenge on the Raiders for their thumping last week beating the Raiders 28-26 in Campbelltown on Sunday. A Beau Mundine hat-trick was not enough to stop the Magpies, whose 6 try effort was one of their best all year. Wests finally played to their potnetial and will be dangerous if they can maintain their form. Canberra will be hopig it was a bump on their road to success.

------

Parramatta completed the round with a big win over Norths. It appears that the Bears have not recovered from their injury crisis last week as they could only score 18 points against Parramatta's 46. It was a good win for the Eels, who were without Chris Thorman. Lee Hopkins scored a double.

Well branighan didn't get his nrl call-up (Most people are saying he looks about 4 weeks off at best - looking a little pudgy) but it appears he provided what Balmain needed to wake up.

It will be interesting to see if we can turn the tables on the dogs this week - I think the side we named is our strongest so far this season so i'll have fingers crossed

Branighan has been that shape for at least 18 months if not forever so it will take more than 4 weeks to change it. He was definately not the best player in the Cabramatta team, although he was quite dominant against Souths when Jolly didnt play. I suppose if he had been a class above Jim Beam, Cabra would have won more than 3 out of 7 while he was there.

By the way, what has happened to Cliff Manu. I saw his name in the Newtown Premier League for the first 4 or 5 weeks but not recently. I always thought he was one of the better players in the Bulls reserve grade.

What is Branighan's record? Has he played 10 games in 1st grade? I have seen a guy play in a winning metro cup reserve grade team and he had played 165 games in 1st grade ARL.

i think that branighan has a lot more 2 offer in football than jbc and he wouldnt b past it. hes still young and i saw him play for saints and i think he can handle it in nrl. my refernence to his record was saying that he had played nrl which means he stood out among his team mates and he should b playin in a higher grad4e and he finally is.

Chjill out guys. I was only trying to spice up the report. While I do think Branighan (at his best) is better than JBC. I have no delusions of grandeur about his ability.

I saw him at the JBC launch this year. He was a keynote speaker and obviously a big selling point of the JBC. But, as has been acknowledged, he's good but not a superstar.
