Price couldn't just build upon Bennett's systems, he had to make his own mark and gamble the club's standing in the comp.
Well the experiment has failed and so Price should go back to what our players are good at. We saw the brick wall defence in action for most of last night's game and if the rest of the formula was put back into place maybe we would have a chance to make the top 8.
I suggest Price eats humble pie and implements the following:
Re-form the left side attack/defence system. We still have all the players - except Boyd -who made up that great system. Make this attacking weaon a feature of our game once again.
Take the plunge and put Lett, Goodwin or Cummins at fullback. Enlist a personal coach for the new fullback initially working on the things Boyd did well at fullback. Especially the way he chimed into the backline feeding Cooper and Morris with attacking opportunities.
Do what is necessary within budget to recruit Jennings and put him at right centre. Offer him a base salary of 450k with an insentive deal. Get Soward, Jennings,Nightingale, the new fullback and Sott aside to work on combinations. The extra strike attack that Jennings provides will stop the opposition targeting Cooper and Morris. Jennings is a tried and true attacking centre, the perfect replacement for Gaz.
Kyle is improving every game now however, it is very plain that he is not a fulltime centre. His brother may be a good centre however, Chase has still not been fit enough to show us anything. Jennings is the man for the job for the remainder of 2012. He may move to left centre when Cooper retires.
Move Kyle to the bench in place of Fein and give him game time at halfback. Instruct him to run to the line at every oportunity. Recruit a halfback coach to provide Kyle with specialist training. Someone like Joey Johns would do the trick.
Get the pack back into the rythem of presenting the brick wall in defence. When coming out of their own half, have the the forwards go back to the safety first system for tackles 1-3 in attack and look to develop a short passing game similar to that of the Bulldogs for tackles 4-5. Protect Soward and Kyle when kicking on the last tackle. Provide a good kick chase as in the Bennett days.
Tell Soward he does not have to run to the line unless he feels there's an oportunity to make/create a line break. Instead tell him to look to provide that special pass to put his team mates through the hole. Soward is scared of being hit hard and will always be scared of this. Bennett recognised this and designed a system which gave him protection/confidence. It was because of this Soward became one of our best ground making weapons. Go back to the system of the Bennett era for Soward, it worked. The main reason Soward was trying to move away from his comfort zone was to satisfy the SOO selectors.
Generally, have the backs standing deeper in attack and train them to run at pace onto the ball. Pass the ball out in front of the receiving player. Keep flat passes to a minimum using them as a suprise rather than as the norm. In defence have our players move up quickly in a line with Soward being give a sweeper role rather than a target for the oppositions forards. Soward can tackle and will do it well in this role. He is also our best player at pouncing on the short kick. Soward reads a game well and could better make the extra defending player at the critcal point in the defencive line.
Ok Price let's go. Now you do have a plan and if you implement it, the Dragons can begin to take their rightful top four position on the ladder.
