Profits from the RLWC13

Profits from the Rugby League World Cup will be pumped back into the game, the tournament's director says.

The 14th World Cup, which culminated in Australia's 34-2 win over New Zealand in Saturday's final at Old Trafford, is expected to generate a profit well in excess of STG3 million ($A5.4 million) from commercial revenue and an aggregate attendance of 457,483.

Nigel Wood, who is chief executive of the Rugby Football League, says the tournament was a resounding success and the profits will be ploughed back into the international game.

"In terms of attendance and TV audience, spectacle and profile and commercial and financial success, the tournament has met, and in most cases exceeded, all expectations," he said.

"The success provides the Rugby League International Federation with the resources to move the sport forward and we will be putting in place structures that ensure the legacy of RLWC2013 around the world is lasting and positive.

"The tournament underlined the importance and appeal of international competition."

Officials reported sell-out crowds at Huddersfield, Warrington, Rochdale, Halifax, Perpignan, Toulouse and Old Trafford, where the attendance of 74,468 for Saturday's final set a new record for international rugby league.

And just so you other nations remember this.

The kings are back on their throne.

awesome news. I hope they spend it wisely and more international games are played between the smaller nations.

Part of me says it should be allocated fairly amongst the up and coming nations and another part says just aim all the $$ at North American development and see what happens.

Great news.

What is the income stream between world cups? Does the RLIF get telecast fees from the 4Nations now? Or is that still divided between RFL, ARL & NZ?

Thought it would have made a little but more but it is still good news. The 08 rlwc made the same amount and I have no idea what they spent that on, hopefully we get a better understanding of how the money is spent this time.

14 teams with squads of 24, that's 336. Save it till the next tournament, and give each player ten grand, and cap it at ten grand. Take individual nation payments out of it. So players play for whoever they can, with no chance of being bought. It's way less than Aussie players are used to, but tough shit.

The cap works for our sport, let's introduce it at the next level. Combine that with an unshackling of origin requirements, and we look sweet. Many problems solved in one WC cycle.

curious how they got that crowd figure.

By counting the crowds once for the triple header and for the double header, I came up with 412,841

I'm almost of the belief that the international body should hold those profits and return them all into emerging nations and improving the game in developed areas that are struggling like PNG, France and the Pacific Island nations.

There was no triple header in the world cup.

Putting the money back into developing nations is the only way to go.

A recent email from a RL pioneer in the USA was requesting just over $18,000 to start up a high school competition. A mid school comp featuring over 300 students has already been established and many of these students are flowing onto high school and the funding will cover the running of a high school competition.

This is the sought of stuff that should be proactively looked at and actioned on by the IRLF(or whichever body responsible) .

To think that someone is emailing a RL website for such funding is embarrassing for RL and its administrators.

My apologies, i misread the opening game on our website where one game is listed twice due to the group c & group d crossover

Australia won't miss their share of the profits. Nor would NZ and England. Invest the money in the minnows.

I wonder how much it cost to run the World Cup in relation to the profit made?

Should be the benchmark, that would give the RLIF $1.2mill a year to grow the game in other countries. Z$200k a year would go a long way in terms of development officers and admin set up etc in places like png, morroca, Samoa etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the 08 WC produce similar profits?

It wa allegedly a similar but unconfirmed profit Terence but every time it gets mentioned it seems to diminish. I've recently seen Steve Mascord quote four and three million AUD.

If 08 made 3 mil where did it go? Surely the competing nations from 08 should have made it this year with that type of funding
