Question regarding Wellington Phoenix...

...and I guess this also included the Kingz (before they became defunct).

Why does the A-League allow the Wellington Phoenix to participate when New Zealand is in a different confederation to Australia (i.e. Australia is in the AFC, whereas New Zealand is still in Oceania)? I've never understood that. Also, even if the Phoenix either get the minor premiership or win the comp, they are not allowed to participate in the Asian Champions League.

we're just being kind to our Kiwi friends over the ditch.

If they didn't play in the A League they would only have their own domestic comp and you wouldn't really envisage a high level of competition for them

They actually have their own domestic competition.

It was an FFA commitment to the OFC so we could have their blessing to move to Asia. I think they add a lot to the HAL and they also add a lot to NZ Football. Without Wellington, the All Whites wouldn't have qualified for SA2010 let alone finished undefeated.

The only thing that gives me the shits about them is that their Aussie players are counted as locals but any Kiwi who plays for any of the 9 Australian clubs is counted in the foreign quota.
