Extremely sad day in the history of our club today with the passing of Merv Cartwright. Merv did so much for this club and was the leading figure in getting us into the competition in 1967.

Merv is of course father to four footballing sons John,Clifford, David and Michael.

He is also the Father-In-Law of current Recruitment Manager Jim Jones.

His grandson Bryce Cartwright will captain our SG Ball side in 2012.

Another grandson Sam Jones played numerous games for the club over recent years in the younger grades.

a sad day for all panther supporters and footy lovers in general.I was lucky enough to have meet and known merv.I can honestly say he was one of the few people i have known over the years involved with footy that after talking with him you would walk away impressed with his knowledge of the game. And there also is another cartwright granson in the development squads coming through Bryces younger brother

Better late than never I suppose.Men of League had to rely on the western Weekender for their info.

I attended the funeral yesterday and the service was a fitting tribute to the life of Merv. Eulogies were delivered by Mick Kelly, Brad Waugh and Cliff Cartwright.

All 3 were members of the St Marys team in the late 60's into the 70's which Merv coached. Mick and Brad spoke of Merv has a second father and praised the way he taught them not only Footy skills but life skills as well.

Brad ended his speech by looking at the coffin saying "Get up Merv, you're not hurt!!!". Which brought laughter from the audience.

Lets hope the Panthers board will honour him with something like naming a grandstand or terrace .

He was one of those men that you only hear good things about. That is very rare today. Hopefully his legacy lives on in the spirit of the Panthers.

I think it would be a good idea to dedicate the 2012 season in his memory, and perhaps with a small insignia (just his name would do) on the jersey, perhaps below the ISC logo.
