ST GEORGE Illawarra received a boost yesterday with five-eighth Mark Gasnier passing a fitness test on his glute injury, clearing him to play against Newcastle tonight.
Gasnier completed an individual fitness test and a team ball-work session and will be rushed back into five-eighth after missing last Saturday's loss to the Bulldogs.
"It was a little rare but fortunately Gaz heals well and I'm sure he will give the guys a rise in confidence," Dragons coach Nathan Brown said.
The Knights also had good news yesterday, with Josh Perry (hamstring), Cory Paterson (shoulder) and Zeb Taia (shoulder) passed fit.
However, Jesse Royal and Brad Tighe did not train yesterday due to the virus which has swept the club. Coach Brian Smith is expected to finalise the side today.
Bulldogs fullback Luke Patten remains in doubt with the shoulder injury that kept him out of the side that beat the Dragons. He had extensive physio on the shoulder this week, with Trent Cutler again to replace him if he is ruled out. Eels coach Michael Hagan said "everyone's OK", although he said Nathan Cayless would not return until the following week due to the death of his mother.
Wests Tigers centre Paul Whatuira has been ruled out of tomorrow night's clash with Gold Coast at Gold Coast Stadium due to concussion. Prop Jarrod Saffy will be the new 18th man, although Tim Sheens is yet to finalise his team. Skipper Brett Hodgson has improved rapidly this week after suffering a cork just above his knee on Monday night against the Cowboys.
The Titans suffered a blow with fullback Chris Walker ruled out with a hamstring strain. Walker broke down at training on Wednesday and was ruled unfit to face the Tigers. Preston Campbell is likely to move to fullback, with Josh Lewis earning a recall at five-eighth.
Cowboys coach Graham Murray is yet to decide who will replace suspended centre Paul Bowman, although he has two likely options. The first would see a recall for Ty Williams on the wing, with Scott Minto switching to the centres, although five-eighth Ben Farrar could move to centre, with Justin Smith joining Johnathan Thurston in the halves. Thurston has trained all week despite his recent shoulder problems and is not considered a doubt.
Canberra will leave for Townsville today with Trevor Thurling as 18th man.
Both Penrith and Souths are expected to be as named for their clash tomorrow night.

The Roosters are expected to be as named for their clash on Sunday with the Warriors, who will travel to Sydney with Lance Hohaia as stand-by.
Brisbane's back-up hooker Ian Lacey (knee) is in doubt to play Manly. Lacey did not train yesterday and is 50/50. John Te Reo has been training with the side and will replace Lacey should he be ruled out. Michael Ennis is rated no chance of playing due to a shoulder injury.
Manly are expected to be as named, with halfback Matt Orford training yesterday despite his virus problems. Clint Halden and Jason Wells will fly to Brisbane with the side but will not play if the original side remains intact.
Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy said Jeremy Smith would play against Cronulla on Monday night despite not being named in the squad.
Cronulla are expected to be as named. Greg Bird is on track for a possible return from a thumb injury a week later.
