Rabbitohs V Roosters Preview

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

http://nrl.com/News/MatchReports/MatchReportsArticle/tabid/336/NewsId/6814/Default.aspx So much at stake for the Rabbitohs’ players and their long-suffering supporters – could this game clinch their first finals berth since 1989? Three consecutive wins and five victories in six games have them poised for September footy for the first time in 17 long years.
The red-and-greens have looked attacking machines in their past two games, swamping the Sea Eagles with an 18-point second-half blitz a fortnight ago before spoiling the Wests Tigers’ party at Leichhardt Oval last Sunday with a 37-12 drubbing.
Down the other end of the park the Roosters will be looking to further salvage pride in their 100th season. Brad Fittler’s boys are smarting on the back of a two-game losing streak, having gone undefeated for five weeks under the new coach.
They were out-muscled by the Panthers last week, clawing back to lose by just six points, and before that succumbed by four points to the Titans at Carrara Stadium – nothing to be ashamed of there.
The bad news for the Rabbitohs is fullback Nathan Merritt is out for the season with serious knee and hamstring injuries – his spot has been taken by impressive 10-game winger Fetuli Talanoa, who scored a decisive second-half try in the victory over the Sea Eagles. (That means veteran David Peachey was overlooked, surely signalling he’s played his final first grade game.)
Shannon Hegarty comes in on the wing.
For the Roosters, Shaun Kenny-Dowall replaces injured centre Mitchell Aubusson.
Watch out Rabbitohs: Souths may be firm favourites but the Roosters aren’t that far away from the form that saw them topple the Storm and Wests Tigers and draw with the Warriors over the past five weeks.
Player-wise look for workhorse captain Craig Fitzgibbon to end the season with another purposeful display – he’s the top tackler in the league with 852.
Out wide Amos Roberts is getting back to the form that saw him a sought-after commodity two seasons ago. He was their best in the Penrith defeat, making 35 touches and 15 runs for 128 metres, with seven tackle breaks, two offloads, a line break and a try.
Watch out Roosters: Confidence is a marvellous, infectious thing: the whole outfit is brimming with it. It’s certainly rubbed off on centre Yileen Gordon. He played rep- quality footy last week, with 12 runs for 84 metres and a great try. He and Nigel Vagana will test the Roosters out wide.
Where it will be won: Attitude will be crucial. It would be impossible for some of the Souths players not to look at likely results from other round 25 games and assume they are safe for the top eight. Of course, as this season has shown us repeatedly since March, that would be unwise. Still, there may be an element of “looking ahead” among the Souths camp, which coach Jason Taylor will no doubt address.
On the other hand, there’s also the weight of expectation, and recent history to take into account: worryingly, Souths haven’t won four consecutive games since 1994, and that’s what they’re aiming for here.
The History: Played 194; Rabbitohs 103, Roosters 86, drawn 5. On of league’s greatest traditional rivalries – the Roosters have won six of the past eight games, including a 40-22 victory in their only clash at Telstra Stadium last year. But the Rabbitohs have bragging rights, having won 18-6 at the SFS in round 1.
Conclusion: Both sides have match-winners around the park. Dean Widders continues to be a crucial cog in the Rabbitohs’ premiership drive. Look for him, Shannon Hegarty and new find Issac Luke to run the Roosters ragged from dummy half, while he’ll also drop the ball on his foot at key moments – aside from hookers he’s kicked more than any other forward in the NRL in 2007 (61 times) and it worked a treat for a Yileen Gordon try last week.
In the end it could hinge on the performance of co-captain Roy Asotasi. The rest of the side lifts when the big fellow charges into the opposition up the centre, as he did magnificently last week making 14 runs for 133 metres. It certainly inspired the likes of Widders and John Sutton, who made two crunching line breaks apiece.
Halves Jeremy Smith and Joe Williams, who’ve been in awesome form over the past few weeks, meet a more seasoned duo in Craig Wing and Braith Anasta here, and won’t get things all their own way. That battle could decide the match.
But, win or lose this one, wouldn’t it be great to see the Rabbitohs play on beyond round 25?

This game has nothing to do with Melon and outcome has not impact on him.

He like a faulty tap ........drip , drip , drip .

Anyway, the only real meaning for now is whther they get two chances in the Finals , by getting to position 4 , therefore meaning for Souths is for and against , not just a close win. If they win by +30 , they still have chance to jump ahead of the Eel , if the Eels beat Broncos by a couple of point.
Close win by Rabbits , means we need Broncos to beat Eels tomorrow.

Of course the above matters if NZ lose today.

else today is a celebration for the souths fans that go out today and the souths players.Whether we lose or win , Souths celebrate. Roosters frankly who care when the game is over.
