Eels v Broncos preview

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

http://nrl.com/News/MatchReports/MatchReportsArticle/tabid/336/NewsId/6815/Default.aspx A proud record goes on the line at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday at 3pm. For 15 consecutive years the Broncos have been involved in the finals.
They have been there from the top-five days, through the old top-eight system, through Super League, into the initial top-10 of the NRL and then as part of the McIntyre top-eight system of the past eight seasons.
But to be assured a place for a 16th straight year they need a victory against the Eels – unless the Wests Tigers are beaten by the Knights on Friday night in which case the record is safe and the main action will be fighting for a better position in the eight.
For the Eels the game represents a chance to turn around some worrying momentum that has seen them lose their past three matches and in fact has them in danger, albeit unlikely, to miss the finals all together.
Should the Broncos hand them a significant defeat and the Tigers and Rabbitohs win big then the Eels could fall to ninth – which would be a hard pill to swallow for Eels fans who have seen their side spend most of the season inside the top four.
Amazingly they are still a hope of finishing fourth, but it will take a convincing win and a Warriors loss to Penrith for that to be a chance.
Michael Hagan has kept to the side that lost to the Dragons last Monday night while the Broncos have moved Greg Eastwood to five-eighth sending Ian Lacey to the bench in the only change from the team which beat the Raiders to keep the dream alive.
The match could be the last in Brisbane colours for stalwarts Petero Civoniceva, Dane Carlaw and Brad Thorn, although the trio is convinced the ride is far from over yet.
Karmichael Hunt may be a last-minute inclusion, subject to how he stretches out on game day – he had hoped to return against the Raiders but didn’t feel 100 per cent.
Watch out Eels: Unheralded half Shane Perry is in solid form, prompting coach Wayne Bennett to call him the ‘glue’ that was keeping the side together.
His performance against the Raiders was impressive – guiding the team around the park with aplomb.
He managed 74 touches, 13 runs for 78 metres, 15 kicks for 420 metres, two try assists and four offloads in an outstanding performance. Plenty of people forget he is a grand final-winning number seven.
Watch out Broncos: Some of this game could resemble Aussie Rules rather than league as the home side kicks high for its athletic backs.
With jumpers like Eric Grothe, Timana Tahu, Krisnan Inu and Jarryd Hayne in their line-up the Eels will look to exploit the Broncos’ main weakness – diffusing bombs.
Currently ranked last in the NRL, the Broncos have successfully taken care of just 58 per cent of bombs and their diffusal rate of cross-field kicks is worse at 54 percent. The Eels have scored 25 tries from kicks in 2007 and the Broncos have leaked 15 from the boot.
Where it will be won: The forwards will control this contest.
The Broncos’ hard men are up to any task with the likes of Civoniceva, Thorn, Carlaw, Tonie Carroll and young gun Dave Taylor in their midst.
The Eels are heavily reliant on Nathan Cayless and Nathan Hindmarsh (who once again cracked the 60 tackles mark last week) to get things done but are effective nonetheless.
The Eels have the swifter backline but if the forwards can’t gain the field position they’ll have a harder time taking advantage of their skill advantage.
This is a big game for Eels halves Tim Smith and Brett Finch – the pair needs to prove their combination is the real deal.
The History: Played 36; Eels 13, Broncos 22, drawn 1. Brisbane have won 13 out of 17 matches they have played at Parramatta Stadium including 12 of 15 against the Eels although the Eels prevailed 20-16 at Suncorp Stadium in round 19 this year.
Conclusion: The gutsy performances from the Broncos over the past six weeks might not have brought many wins but it has shown how determined they are to defend their premiership until their last breath.
The Eels on the other hand have looked lacklustre and anything but contenders over the past three weeks, although their clash against the Storm showed some promise.
But the losses to Cronulla and St George Illawarra have been sub par performances and make you wonder if they can match it with a Brisbane side that has always known how to win when it counts.
Match officials: Referee – Tony Archer; Sideline Officials – Russell Turner & Matt Cecchin; Video ref – Phil Cooley.
Televised: Channel Nine – Delayed 4pm; Foxsports 3 – Delayed 4.30pm.

How the f**k are favourites  You would have more chance of backing a winner at Randwick than putting your cash on us ATM. Still i hope i am wrong.

If the Broncos win, they will be 5th, and you'd think, have two lives in the playoffs. Warriors/Broncos on Friday at Mt Smart.

If the Eels win, they will end up in 5th, or 4th if we lose tonight. Eels/Warriors at Parramatta.

Parker misses the conversion to the Steve Michaels try, and what a try it was

Parra 6-4

This could be a cracker

We are just making up the numbers in the top 8.

The way I see it, the finals are basically a procession for Melbourne. The Warriors and Manly are the only remote hopes of upsetting the apple cart. Everyone this year is an also ran.
