South Sydney have suffered another injury blow ahead of Thursday night's season opener against Sydney Roosters with prop Tom Burgess ruled out due to a foot problem.
Burgess, who was in contention for a berth on the interchange bench, had his foot in a moon boot at training on Monday and will be sidelined for four to eight weeks.
The English forward joins five-eighth Luke Keary on the Rabbitohs casualty list after the rookie playmaker underwent surgery for a shoulder injury sustained in the recent NRL Nines in Auckland.
Keary will be out for up to five months and his back up Dylan Walker is also battling to be fit for the opening round clash against the 2013 premiers and Souths arch rivals after suffering an ankle injury in the Charity Shield win over St George Illawarra.
Halfbacks Adam Reynolds missed the clash with the Dragons due to a knee problem but the Rabbitohs are hopeful he will be fit to play in Thursday night's clash at ANZ Stadium.
If either Reynolds or Walker are ruled out, captain John Sutton is expected to revert to his familiar five-eighth role after training the off-season at lock.

There was a picture of him the day after the CS in a moon-boot going to a Charlotte Dawson memorial thing. I'm surprised we didn't hear anything until now.

With the halves crisis, it looks like it's going to be a slow start to 2014...

Not a great start to the season and we haven't yet played a serious game of football.

TOM BURGESS SET TO RETURN FROM INJURY

GREAT news for Souths fans with giant prop Tom Burgess set to play his first game of the season this weekend.

The twin of tearaway front-rower George, Tom has had a nightmare start to 2014 with a nagging foot injury preventing him from playing.

He wore a moon boot for weeks and concerned officials were thinking he may need surgery and miss much of the season.
But the injury has finally come good after a combination of rest and physiotherapy and the English giant will make his first appearance of the year in the NSW Cup for Souths’ feeder team North Sydney this weekend.
