Rabbitohs Forge Alliances With North Sydney Bears and Brisbane Easts Tigers
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have forged alliances with the North Sydney Bears and Queensland Cup Club Brisbane Easts Tigers, allowing the Rabbitohs to broaden their recruitment net with a foothold in Queensland and north of the harbour in Sydney.
The North Sydney Bears will act as the Rabbitohs feeder Club in the NSW Rugby League Premier League competition, allowing the Bears access to players contracted to the Rabbitohs who havent been selected in the NRL side. The partnership with Brisbane Easts will allow the Rabbitohs to tap into the Tigers current recruitment and development systems in Queensland, as well as providing a Club for young Queenslanders recruited by the Rabbitohs to play at and develop without having to relocate to Sydney.
These alliances are an innovative way for the Rabbitohs to broaden their player base in Queensland as well having links both north and south of the harbour, controlling the central areas of Sydney.
The Rabbitohs and the Bears are both foundation Clubs, having both been in existence since 1908, with the Rabbitohs celebrating their 100th season in 2007.
Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson said: We are delighted to have both of these Clubs aligned with us as it provides us many options for our young players as they will be dual registered with the NSWRL and the QRL.
The Bears are a fellow foundation Club and this partnership will allow us to concentrate our efforts on the NRL side and use the Bears expertise to run the Premier League team.
It also gives us a presence on both sides of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, giving North Sydney juniors a pathway into the NRL with a Sydney Club.
There are approximately 22,000 junior Rugby League players between Rockhampton and the NSW border and a majority of the best players in this area have been picked up by the Broncos in the past.
Now that we have formed an alliance with Easts we will have the opportunity to put young players on scholarship in Queensland and not have to move them to Sydney before they or their parents feel they are ready. Brisbane Easts are a very strong Club both on the field, and off with a profitable Leagues Club.
There is a wealth of talent in Queensland and we are looking forward to working with Easts in Brisbane in identifying the players we want to come through the ranks and play with our South Sydney junior players at the Rabbitohs in future years.
We are very confident in the development systems currently being run by South Sydney Juniors and Brisbane Easts, and these alliances we have formed will allow us to compete with other NRL Clubs that have established ties in the Queensland market.
We are also keen to help establish ties between Easts and our supporters group in Queensland, QforSS, enabling them to establish a home base in Brisbane at Easts Leagues Club.
With the NRL looking at introducing a national under-20s competition in the not-too-distant future, many Clubs will be looking to outsource their Premier League side and we now have an agreement with a fellow foundation Club in the Bears that can see us move forward when this new competition comes to fruition.
North Sydney Bears General Manager Greg Florimo says the changes the Rabbitohs have made recently make the outlook for the two Clubs a bright one indeed.
Were very excited to be involved with the Rabbitohs, particularly looking at the moves Souths have made recently, Mr Florimo said.
The move to privatisation and the strong recruitment drive that has taken place are very positive moves and were looking forward to being a part of the future.
Eastern Suburbs President Graham Anderson is also looking forward to sharing resources with the Rabbitohs and providing added opportunities for the Clubs players.
We feel that this partnership with the Rabbitohs will broaden the scope of what our Club has to offer players, as well as providing them with a clear path to the NRL, Mr Anderson said.
We will dual register players with both the QRL and NSWRL, allowing our players to play at Easts until time comes when they are required at the NRL level with the Rabbitohs.
It is an exciting development for our Club and it is an opportunity we will work very hard at to achieve our goal of producing quality Rugby League players.
