Brad, to be honest, Ilias is NOT in the same boat as Keary. He simply does not have the speed, aggressive intent with ball, cadence and awareness that Keary displayed when Maguire first introduced him to A Grade. Ilias may do well at St George, but he will never be a standout like Keary was for 5-6 seasons.
you are right

sick of players doing nothing for us and then killing us when we play them

not bad mouthing ilias as a player who i think would actualy make a sensational number 9 in the mould of Robson.

But as a manufactured half he is terrible
Hi lads. I’m not jumping in hear to stir the pot as I have a lot of respect for the bunnies and my better half is a big fan.

As I’ve stated on our forum, I’m willing to wipe the slate clean in regards to Illias as I’m sure he wasn’t in the healthiest environment to grow as a player because he had some big personalities around him who would have had more control over the team than the coach himself.
Also, the fact Cookie endorsed him is enough for me.
Time will tell but I feel confident that if anyone’s going to get the best out of him it will be Flanno.
i think both our teams are in for a better year in 25

Bateman a big fat NOOO.

I would take Smith in a heartbeat. His price should have dropped due to his form at roosters for a starting 9 i reckon we could get him at 600k but a condition would be to stop his podcast on Bye round and just concentrate on footy.

Lodge i would sign for a year to year basis.

Agree. He also only got the ball when Cody didn’t want it. You have to let your halfback run the show to let them show their best.
So it's all Cody's fault eh?
This is garbage.

The reason the ball went to Cody was because he was (mainly) posted on the left side, and with that, the left side of attack for Souths was one of, if not the most lethal attacking sides in the NRL during that period up until the middle of the 2023 season. That, and the fact that Campbell Graham got injured, the right side was less of a threat, resulting Souths going to the left side more and more.

Cody didn't suddenly decide during a game "I don't want the ball now, I'll have a rest, give it to Lachlan". It's laughable that you think this.

Lachlan's kicking game in general play wasn't good, we had one of the lowest number in the NRL in kicks resulting in repeat sets, far far lower than when Reynolds was there on the right side.

Add in the combination with Keaon seemed to wither away to being a non event. Now whether that was because of Illias, or Koloamatangi's performance, or absence of Graham out there is up for debate, but let's not pretend there weren't deficiencies in the POA on that right side after Adam Reynolds left.

You like to blame people because Keary left, Illias wasn't wanted etc etc and paper over the REAL reasons why.

Selective thinking is all the rage. Many people will tell you it's a good thing for a young half to be able to be eased into first grade surrounded by experienced players to help take the pressure off as he learns the ropes from them. On the other hand, now it's "they never let him call the shots".

Well, he's only just got over 50 games under his belt so has done his apprenticeship and with K.Flanagan as his halves partner and Cooky now talking Illy up, Cooky can now give Illy the ball far more rather than going to Cody who, lets all remember, has been at the top of the NRL for combined try and line break assists, plus overall try involvements for the past half dozen seasons or so (although was well down on those numbers this past season as was the entire squad).

I am not worried that Ilias will make us regret letting him go as I don't think he will but good luck to the kid. I have no idea how Dodd will go though. I'd rather focus on us rather than an ex-player at another club.

Weekend Read: All signs point to success at South Sydney under Wayne Bennett – again
Brent Read

November 29, 2024

The second coming is almost upon Rabbitohs fans as Wayne Bennett officially takes charge at the club. But Bennett has a significant job on his hands, and there are several factors between him and success, writes Brent Read

The second coming is almost upon us.

Wayne Bennett, the messiah in the eyes of many South Sydney fans, is about to saunter through the doors at the Rabbitohs and spread his magic dust over a club that was on its knees at the end of last season.

Bennett has had an extended break and left the early part of pre-season in the hands of his assistants. He is now ready to take charge again and you can picture it now – Bennett stationed under the posts at Heffron Park, watching quietly with that familiar crooked smile on his weathered face.

He won’t necessarily say a lot, but his silence has always spoken a thousand words. Bennett has a way of staring right through you. Journalists know that better than most, many of us having been on the end of one of those abbreviated answers followed by an unsettling glare in a post-match press conference.

Plenty of the Rabbitohs have had the experience as well and walked away better for it. They certainly haven’t been the same since his departure at the end of 2021, enjoying early joy under his successor Jason Demetriou before things spectacularly unravelled last season.

It was an unmitigated disaster and Bennett has a significant job on his hands, his cause not helped by the NRL and the stiff draw they have handed him to start the year.

The Rabbitohs are coming off a season of abject disappointment and they have a wretched opening to 2025 but Bennett has faced bigger challenges before.

Witness what he did at the Dolphins, surprising many with the way he turned a fledgling club into a force in the blink of an eye.

Players still want to play under him and for him. That may be the most significant factor of all. You only have to look at the smile that comes across Latrell Mitchell’s face when Bennett’s name is mentioned.

Wayne Bennett’s bond with Latrell Mitchell will likely dictate where they finish in 2025.

Their bond will largely dictate where Souths finish next season. Mitchell is the club’s most important player – and one of the most influential in the competition – but he is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career.

Bennett will back himself to get the best out of the big man and if he does, Souths are suddenly a different proposition. They become a premiership contender overnight. The draw becomes a non-factor.

They will fear no one if Latrell is flying. Yes, there are holes to fill but the departure of Lachlan Ilias to St George Illawarra has left them with money to spend.

A middle forward is on their radar. Matt Lodge will be discussed. They also have a need for depth in the outside backs and it will be a juggling act for Bennett, albeit one he has no doubt navigated before given the length and breadth of his career.

Next year marks the 40-year anniversary of Bennett’s first premiership as a top grade coach – with Souths in the Brisbane competition. It’s not the only anniversary on his doorstep. Next year also marks the 15-year anniversary of his last premiership in the NRL – that was 2010 with the Dragons and while he has gone close since, most notably the last time he was at Souths when his title hope was ended by the Penrith juggernaut, he hasn’t been able to add another premiership to his resume.

As much as Bennett savours his relationship with players, there’s also a competitive flame burning inside the super coach. You don’t coach into your 70s without having lashings of hunger and desire.

No doubt it gnaws away at Bennett that he has gone so long without tasting a title. He is a winner but he hasn’t celebrated the ultimate victory for what feels like an eternity.

Seven premierships are plenty – eight if you include that title in Brisbane with Souths – but there’s always room for another. He has three years to deliver one at the Rabbitohs.

Get it done and it may be his most significant milestone yet.

Field, Sedaris, c Walker Hill, Farah, Paulo want more?
Paulo? Hahahahaha Where's he at now?
Farah? You mean the Tigers legend who was discarded like dunny paper by his own club, joined out club, went to preliminary finals, and then when let go ended up...where?
Nowhere?
Walker - what happened to him after winning a GF with us in 2014?

The rest were all pre- NRL and left because there was no enforcement of salary cap, and the NEWS LTD clubs exploited that, while we were kicked out of the comp.

Yeah, I want more examples, because you are embarrassing yourself. You haven't come up with one yet that "killed us"

Yeah, selective memory.
It's all here

Just compare 2021, to the following years 2022, 2023, 2024.
Where's Illias on these lists?
Where's Cody, (and Adam in 2021, 2020) on these lists?
But "Illias only got the ball when Cody didn’t want it."

It's funny you know, how there is this "In Wayne we trust" philosophy here, but Wayne obviously didn't try to keep Illias and let him go. So do we not trust Wayne for this?
Nah, it's Cody's fault......
