The Newcastle Knights continued on their disappointing start to the season on Saturday night at EnergyAustralia Stadium. The Knights, who handed the Magpies their first win of the season last week, suffered another loss, this time to the Canberra Raiders. The Raiders prevailed by 24 points to 16 and in doing so, continued their push for a top 8 spot. The Knights loss extended the gap between the 8th placed team and themselves and they now face an uphill battle to make the semi-finals.
After just a few minutes the Raiders, looking to avenge their round 2 loss to the Knights opened the scoring through fullback William Zillman. Marc Herbert converted to give his side an early lead. Ten minutes later the Knights hit back through an individual effort by Brendan Hunt. Hunt went to the line, before putting in a grubber kick, which hit the left hand upright before rebounding into his arms. Daniel Abraham, making his way back from a broken leg, converted in the absence of Brad Tighe. The remaining twenty-five minutes of the first half was spent in the middle of EnergyAustralia Stadium with both teams not posing many questions in attack and defence from both teams was solid. In the 31st minute the Raiders again pushed into the lead after Craig Frawley scored out wide and Bronx Goodwin converted his centres try to give the Raiders a 12-6 lead going into the halftime break.
Fifteen minutes into the second half the Raiders put the match out of the Knights reach and fullback William Zillman crossed for his double to extend the lead out to twelve. The Knights, looking for something special from someone, looked out of sorts for the remainder of the match. This wasnt helped by the fact that their halves who were named earlier in the week did not take any part in the match and as a consequence they lacked cohesion. Jersey Flegg halfback Scott Dureau tried hard, as did five-eight Brendan Hunt, but it was never going to be good enough. In the 62nd minute Dureau gave the Knights some hope when he crossed out near the western touchline. Abrahams missed conversion ensured the Knights were going to have to do something special to get a win in the final18 minutes. Former Knights forward Dane Tilse put the final nail in his old sides coffin in the 70th minute when he ran onto a brilliant short ball from hooker Ryan Hinchcliffe before powering his way over two Knights defenders and slamming the ball down. Goodwin again added the extras and the Raiders were home, leading 24-10 with ten minutes remaining. The Knights had one final trick for their home supporters. This was through halfback Dureau who weaved his way through two defenders from halfway before drawing the fullback and sending hooker Matt Thurston onto a saloon passage to the tryline. Abraham converted from beside the posts but it was all too late as the Knights slumped to their seventh loss of the season. They remain anchored on 8 competition points and their season is fast slipping away.
