As many know there is to be a rally on this coming Wednesday.

The "Axe the Tax" Protest Rally is on the 1st of October 2003 at 11.00am

Where: Meet at First Fleet Park, Circular Quay (beside the Museum of Contemporary Art). Please wear your Sharks gear and support the NRL and your Club!

When notification of this appeared on the O Forum it was evident many could not attend.

However.....

There is to be another rally to be held locally on Monday October 13th, 7.30pm. The venue is Club Menai and the M.C. is our own Glenn Wheeler

I went today. Not with the Sharks contingent though. Of which there seemed maybe 15 people marching together, who were a mix of fans, club staff and players. I was really glad to see Keith Galloway and Reece Williams at the rally, in playing jerseys. Good stuff.

It was a much larger turnout than I expected, and despite what Egan has since said, I am sure he is starting to get quite worried about the strength of the club movement.

Are these guys old enough be frequenting clubs ???

No, but I saw Galloway in Carmens with the Flegg team back in May. Anyway I am sure that was not the point of them being there. There were pleanty of kids in the junior sports club's gear aswell as many retirees. I would have guessed more than 15000 people were there, of which atleast 30% from outside of Sydney. Pretty good turnout for a work day.

News.com.au said that there were about 15,000 there. Not a bad turn out. :)

Around 100,000 people at a time turned up at anti-war rallies before the Iraq war.

We can only hope that these rallies are just as successful

I got a phone call from people conducting a survey on this poker machine tax. One of the questions was do you think any NRL clubs would go under if the tax was implemented.. Other questions included would it effect how you vote? (who you would vote for) and are you for or against the tax.
Somebody is making this a big big issue. When is the election?

No-one forces people to put money through poker machines and people have to take responsibility for their own actions. I have no sympathy at all for those people who spend all their hard earned, and then some, on the pokies. I do feel sorry for the families of these people though who, through no fault of their own, then have to go without any of the luxuries and many of the necessities of life. The level of poker machine taxes also won't effect how much people gamble away on the pokies. If any of the monies are going to be used to provide counselling to those who gamble and some sort of support to their familes, then I personally think that is a good thing.

The big problem has been that the clubs have regarded poker machines as a cash cow for far too long and have lost ther direction and/or will to enhance or develop alternative income streams that don't need to rely on what you correctly point out are social parasites.
