Former New Zealand Maori five-eighth Rangi Chase has abandoned the pursuit of a Kiwis jersey in favour of joining England's train-on squad ahead of the Four Nations.
The 25-year-old Castleford star has living in England since 2009 and thus qualifies on residency grounds.
He was in New Zealand's training squad ahead of the 2008 World Cup but was not selected for tournament, nor has he made any appearances for the Kiwis.
He did represent the New Zealand Maori side as recently as last year, ironically against England, but it did not affect his availability for his adopted country.

Have a read of his interview before the exiles game. Laughable

"It's a proud moment for me to get picked alongside guys such as Danny Buderus and Steve Menzies. I'm playing alongside guys with a lot of test and State of Origin experience while Thomas Leuluai is a Kiwis regular.

"Hopefully, I'll end up playing. This game could help me play for New Zealand. That's my goal to wear the black and white of my country.

"It's a dream of mine since I was a little kid. If I play well [in Leeds] I might get a crack.

"The only thing that is stopping me (from staying long-term in Super League) is the NRL. It is the best competition and there are a lot of quality players in my position. The best player in the world Benji Marshall is in front of me (in the Kiwi picture) and that is a good reason why one day I want to play in the NRL."

Brilliant. I guess 'New Zealand didn't want me, so I made do with England' didn't come out quite right in the latest interview.

A Joke!
Residency rule should be changed to 6 years

Rangi Chase along with...
Chris Heighington (Wests Tigers)
Jack Reed (Brisbane Broncos)

and Aussie based players...
Gareth Ellis (Wests Tigers)
Gareth Widdop (Melbourne Storm)

English Rugby League is getting weaker...

:? Three of those players are English born, the other two 100% eligible through the same heritage/residency rules that have benefited NZ and Aus.

I'd love you to explain how the availability of more players, and players such as CH and Reed that could've gone either way choosing England means they're getting weaker.

Complete idiocy, it's not like he decided to join a country where he has heritage and needs players ala Minichello to Italy.

I don't think anyone's bothered...we have 2 world class halves, or 3 if you are of the opinion Johnson is.

I think it's more the fact its another nonsense eligibility story surrounding international league.

big meh... - he's so far down the pecking order for kiwis that this is irrelevant really.
I wonder deep down how he is going to feel when the anthems are played and the haka happens.

Some of you clowns have short memories,no different to Webby or Fein, good on Rangi, I wish him well.

There is no way in hell he would make the Kiwis squad, let alone the team. Too many 6+7's.

OB I see your point and wont join this debate, but I see it somewhat funny that England with a far greater talent pool availale to them has to select a Kiwi. It almosts panders to the debate that NRL is superior to ESL.

First of all - most who post here know that I am a big Rangi Chase fan and always have been.

I have met Rangi before and he is top dude and a true maori lol.
I see a number of people bagging him but they need to look at the whole picture.

I/we can debate about this issue and a number of related issues it brings up for quite some time.

As a NZ league league fraternity we need to get away thinking that the NRL and Australia are the be all of Rugby League.
League talent is undeniable and we shouldnt require the Australian Competition and is media/coaching structure to dictate which players are to a certain standard etc.

HE SHOULD BE IN THE KIWI SQUAD THAT WAS NAMED!!!!
He should have been selected over NATHAN FIEN & the golden boy SHAUN JOHNSON.

FIEN is an australian and is over the hill and in crap form

JOHNSON still has to develop as a player first.
He is getting better all the time but not yet an international player.
People can cream themselves all they want . . . when he can show he can tackle and show he can put his body on the line on attack then I would look at him.

I rate what NZRL have been doing of late (in general).
But the powers that be need to be questioned if not BAGGED over this issue.

NZRL release 'fluff' press releases and spend so much time "CONFIRMING or perhaps better term CONVERTING" those AUSSIE players with Kiwi Heritage.
Then patting themselves on the back when peeps like Beale and hoffman put their hand up.

Yet why cant they be in contact with the arguably the BEST players in Superleauge who just happens to be a maori boy from Dannivirke.
A guy who has overcome repeated obstacles over the years to become a top line professional rugby league player.

Why dont they release a statement now.
They should have contact with him . .. just like they are in contact with other fringe kiwis.

Wonder why Junior Kiwis team hasnt been named yet??? Probably have to find replacements for those 'Kiwis' who have been named in the aussie squad.

On Rangi . . .
heaps of people keep on going on - he is a player who couldnt make it in the NRL.

dont get it twisted people . . . sometimes it just the way things work out.

e.g
so leualauai couldnt make it in the NRL . . please he could easily get a starting halfback spot at a number of clubs.

He left St George after it was announced Bennett was going to the Dragons.
He was unsigned at the time and couldnt wait to put his future on hold while waiting to confirm he was part of bennetts plans.

Should he come to the NRL to give it a crack?? Personally I would like to see it.

Why would he like to go back to aussie?? the same country where he gets charged with assault after helping bouncers with a guy who was beating people (inc bouncers) up.

No doubt He had a hard life . .. and is a person with simple values.
England has given him a future he could only dream of . . and ironically he is a very LOYAL dude lol.

haha but on a side note who is manager ffs. Get a new one!!!
Help the brother out with his own media releases/interviews LOL.

I agree with this. Kearney appears to have gone on loyalty - Fien having served the Kiwis well during his time, and also Leuluai (I don't know how his form is in the UK, admittedly).

It needs to be accepted that the UK is not seen as a viable option as far as picking players for the Kiwis. As long as it is viewed as a retirement home for NRL players, and ones who couldn't quite make it, it never will be. Whether that is right or wrong, I don't know. I don't watch Super League.

The rest of the Kiwis are back here playing in the best competition in the world against the best players in the world (including the Kangaroos, their main opposition). It's a much easier gauge for Kearney.

Leuluai has moved to hooker and done well for Wigan. I admittedly haven't seen every game, but every time I saw him he looked good - in much better form than Fein or Luke at least.
