Ranking the centres

Following on from the creative and intelligent discussion generated from the fullback, wing, halve, and five-eights threads.

1. Lyon
2. Jennings
3. J. Morris
4. Ferguson (if he gets registered)
5. Hodges (still very good but has lost some speed)
6. Idris
7 Whare
8. Tate

After this there are a few in the next tier that aren't separated by much

9. Chambers
10. Gagai
11. Matai
12. Leilua
13. Inu
14. Hurrell

If Will Hopoate plays centre i expect him to be easily in the top 10 and i expect a big season from Jack Wighton and Jacob Loko.

Whare is playing great and the reason Simmons topped the try scores in 2013. Another year like this one and he's top 5 for mine.

Greg Inglis would be number 1 without doubt, and still is when he represents Australia and QLD. But going off players who play centre for their club, my top 5 would be:

1. Jamie Lyon
2. Michael Jennings
3. Blake Ferguson
4. Dean Whare
5. Justin Hodges (would be up at the top if it wasn't for so many injuries the past few years. Hopefully he gets a deserving end to his career and doesn't go out like Matt Cooper did)

I don't rate Josh Morris all that highly... he is a solid player, but there are much fancier centres running around IMO. Brent Tate is long past his best. Jamal Idris has played many more awful games at centre then goood ones. So based on the 2013 season that would be my top 5, although Fergo might be rated a bit high based on missing a huge chunk of the season.

I just hope the NRL forces him to sit out of the 2014 season. The guy needs to be punished for his repeated actions and if he takes the field at all in 2014 he will not be getting the punishment he deserves. Dane Gagai will have most likely moved into his place in the top 5 by then.

I don't know about that anymore.

Generally, his positioning is pretty awful and it seems like NSW/NZ have found a way to keep him quiet.

If he stuck at it, I'm sure he'd be the best hands down, but now he's a fullback and for my money, the best in the business.

Once Inglis moved to fullback, Souths best centre was here

1. Jamie Lyon(the complete package)
2. Justin Hodges(as much as I love Jennings as a Roosters fan people forget how good Justin is due to injury. His offloading and evasive running game makes him a dangerous attacking weapon. Also as much as I hate to say it Jenko is a bit dependent on forwards)
3. Michael Jennings(near unstoppable close to the line. has gone up a notch on his move to the Chooks. try scoring machine and got his defense sorted out. however some rough patches have put him behind Hodges)
4. Blake Ferguson(oozes talent. absolutely freakish. could be best centre if he fixed his attitude and gets his head screwed on)
5. Steve Matai(monumental grub but very consistent. makes a good combination with Taufua)
6. Dean Whare(putting him ahead of Morris will be controversial I know but WHare is a much more dangerous player than him. improved alot in 2013. Like Jennings evasive and great footwork)
7. Jamal Idris(on fire before injury. metre eater and big season coming up)
8. Josh Morris(with Barba gone he isnt the same. performed alright in Origin, however he is consistent but doesn't provide that dimension other centres do)
9. Will Chambers(on the up. become a top notch centre)
10. Dane Gagai(similar to Justin Hodges, faded away in the latter part of the season however. will make Qld some day)

Best moneyball centre -

B. Goodwin. On form, definitely in the top 5.

Walker will be centre with Jennings for NSW next year. Hayne fullback. Morris wing.

Cheers

I agree on most points, i'd probably have Morris ahead of Whare but this year Whare showed he was up there with the best and will only get better, also Morris did play out of position for a few rounds. But yeah this list is close to what i'd have.

Your on he mark with top 5 son, though Hodges ads no value on the sidelines...

So sad to see the lack of Chris Lawrence in these lists...

Devastating to see what a horrible injury can do to a player
