Realistic goals for the year

lets face it the sharks had a terrible season last year - it would be nice to just blame the coach but the reality is most players played poorly

defence was bad

signing vagana is good but not enough IMO

discipline will continue to be a problem and i guess we can blame the refs until the cows come home - i hope raper is more switched on though

i think it will take at least half a year to fix these 2 big problems somewhat
so if we manage to win nearly as many as we loose by the halfway point then we should make the 8

if we scrape into the eight that will be a very good result as far as i am concerned

i don't agree with you mate .

I think the players were so worried if they were doing the right things with Ando's strict plays etc and with so many young guy's they were looking for someone else to step up ... no confidence thats all ....

They have it back now .... you can just tell mate

This team is better and will play alot better then anyone expects .

Mark my words !

I think discipline has been a problem for a while. Last year saw us give away too many penalties for silly things like holding down too long, or the flop etc.

I think our defence will be improved on last year - there is no JA, Emilio, Milford etc to miss so many tackles. And there seems to be a lot more harmony and team spirit at the moment, which surely is going to have a reflection on the field.

I think we can make the 8, even if it is only 8th spot

thats ok

i actually wish i was like you troy and think things will be plain sailing

i think we have some big weaknesses though that arent going to dissappear overnight

thats why i started a thread on realistic goals rather than best scenario

Top 8 is reasonable expectation IMO. I'm even hoping to win the bloody thing.
Our younguns are a year further up the ladder and that's a BIG plus IMO.
Had small wagers we make the 8, the 4, and are premiers too.

we've got to improve our defense if we're going to be any chance come finals time

the fact we let a bunch of pot smoking coastal hippes nearly beat us in the trials says it all

The pot smoking coastal hippies were a bit fresher though given we had already played against two other teams.

Given the return of one of the favourite sons into the fold, and the history that Raper has with the club and some of the players, I realistically think top 4. But top 6 will do as I will still win a bet I have with a co-worker who follows the queens. :)

I think the top 8 is a reasonable expectation, I honestly don't think we are a chance of winning it though in 2004.

Being purely objective here, I think we need a "new" three year plan under Rapes, if we can sneak into the 8 this year , and with the addition of a couple more quality signings and few more juniors coming on, I think a premiership (or at least really challenging for one) is not beyond reach within the next 3 seasons.

We need need a class halves combination to develop to really challenge the likes of the Roosters, Newcastle & Penrith. We have half of that combo in Kimmorley, the other half has to step up THIS year.

Realistic goals?
Well the aim is to make the 8 as high as possible. Once in the 8, anybody can win the thing.
Goals to reach the 8?
1. Goals!!!! find an >80% kicker in the club
or buy one
2. Remove all traces of Andoness from practice, play & minds.
3. Create innovative techniques, styles & patterns that will give us the edge over the competition in attack & defense.
4. Get the referees back on side.
5. Get the discipline back.
6. Further develop depth.
7. Find a f**king 5/8 somewhere!!!!

Yep totally agree. And I think it is realistic we can get most of those points achieved this year with a bit of luck.

i can agree with the disipline factor but "getting back on side with the refs" - there is never a chance of that happening.

perhaps if we follow their instructions and get off the tackled player

dont abuse them all game

and dont have the coach blame them for our poor performances

Discipline was a huge problem last year and Stuey needs to get this ironed out as quickly as possible. I do not want to see another 70 point drubbing this year. As much as the ref ruined that particular game, I was pretty disgusted with the way the players just threw in the towel and turned it into a game of touch for the Eels. Enough said on that.

The squad. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Vagana as 5/8 and Franze in the centres, with Bailey back in the forwards where he belongs. Bird showed promise up until last year when his ego seemed to overshadow his ability. A stint in the reserves might help sort him out IMO. Merritt as kicker.

I believe that we can make the semis and I'll be satisfied with that for this season. Realistically, a premiership is probably beyond us this year, but a good solid year with us winning all matches against the Drags and finishing higher than them would be nice.

Goals for the year? Our goal is to win the comp! The one thing I do agree on Ando with, is getting rid of the "Making the finals is good enough" attitude. If we're not going into the season believing we can/will win the comp then we might as well not turn up.
