Aussies worried about Super 14 proposal

23/05/2006 5:44:02
Australian Super 14 teams are not happy with the thought of playing against weaker New Zealand teams in next year's competition.
Queensland Reds CEO Theo Psaros says they are very concerned at the news they are hearing and is hoping All Blacks coach Graham Henry does not get his wish to rest key players at the start of next year's competition.
Psaros says the Reds will be disappointed not to play the best players from New Zealand, and he is sure the other Australian teams and South African sides are feeling the same way.
Psaros suggests Henry may be going too far and is worried about the implications of trying to market a watered down competition.
He predicts fewer Australian fans will turn out to watch New Zealand games if players are rested en masse, and says it is all well and good to worry about players in a World Cup year, but believes the financial stability of rugby in both countries has to be considered.
He says it is all about the entertainment dollar, with ticket buyers wanting to see the best performing, and for them there is also a lot of competition with league and the AFL.
Psaros imagines Australians would be up in arms if the ARU was to suggest the same thing for the Wallabies.
The NZRU will sort out the contentious player resting issue tomorrow in Wellington with the five Super 14 teams.
New All Blacks captain Richie McCaw is leaving it to the experts, regarding the resting of All Blacks next year.
He points out it is only a proposal at this stage, and that those in charge will consider all the implications.
McCaw says he will be happy with either outcome.
He does say, however, that it is important the All Blacks are in the best shape for the World Cup, no matter what it takes.

i guess the reds don't want to look too stupid as to be below the nz teams without their all blacks.

What do they expect? The Reds should jump at the chance to beat under strength teams and clock up some wins.

The thing is, my money is on most of them still beating Queensland comfortably. There's a load of depth in NZ Rugby.

The NZRU should put an end to this nonsense. Sides should play at full strength and that's that!

NFI

Explain how I have NFI? The Super 14 has almost NO support outside of traditional rugby fans, and this will make the situation far worse.

In Australia maybe, but in NZ the fans will turn up whether or not the ABs are rested. Same goes in SA.

I would turn up just to see the next layer of players. Much the same way I enjoy the NPC when they rest the AB's for the first 3-4 weeks of the comp. It evens out the NPC comp. I would like to see how the next layer of players would go against a full strength Reds/Tahs/Bulls outfit. Half the NZ teams would probably get thrashed but it would be intersting to see how they handle it. Also it would be nice to see some SA teams dominate the comp and heres a chance for them to do it.

the south africans coach has been saying for the last two months that he wants to rest the springboks for the whole (or majority) super 14 next year.

What's the point of having the competition if the best players aren't playing?

I can walk down to Coogee Oval and have the ground to myself if I want to watch the 'next level'.

haha nice reply Timbo. Going on what happens in the NPC when they rest the AB's it actually evens out the comp. You dont see the teams like Cantab, Auckland, Wiakato dominate the lower teams like Southland, Northland and Taranaki (Though they hold their own now anyway) and it makes for a more interesting comp. Seeing the Crusaders dominating the S14/12 for the last 8-6 years is getting tiring and it will be interesting to see which teams end up dominating the final 4.
