'There would have to be strict parameters': Issues with five-minute sin bin

NRL GM of elite football Graham Annesley has confirmed that consideration would be given to reintroducing a five-minute sinbin, but cautioned that it could lead to accusations of inconsistency.

Sin bins for professional fouls only and if the team with 13 scores a try at any point within the 10 minutes the binned player comes back on. This makes sense as a try or penalty try is already considered a harsh enough penalty in instances where a professional foul occurs but a try is still awarded.

Bring in a "ejection" rule for serious foul play where the player is disqualified but the infringing team still plays with a full compliment. This will not lead to players purposely taking out other players as the media would have you believe and this can be seen in AFL, NFL, NBA etc where there is no concept of teams being forced to play a player down.

Agree with your sin bin idea but not sure about your next point. Despite it not occurring as you correctly pointed out in other sports, the possibility still exists though and especially in a grand final where a suspension merely means a longer off season for the offender. Would be worth taking out a key player knowing your team won’t be burdened with a 13 on 12 scenario. Could’ve had a different result in 88 with today’s refs.

Yep. Even the National Hockey League in the US, which uses a penalty box system, enforces being a player down for minor infractions (which is usually a 2 minute stint in the box, leaving a team down). Its' only for major infractions, which result in a player going to the box for 10 minutes, where during that period the offending team can put in a sub whilst the player is in the box.

All I can offer on this, is that Saab went to ground with his hands "holding the ball" that he went for, and was beaten to by the Boys.

Obviously, he never had the ball, but clearly he expects to catch it...imo

I think the game needs people confident to make quick decisions, but if you’re going to hang your hat on being ‘one look Kasey’, at least get the decision right. If for the majority of decisions you do it quickly and get it right, great, but don’t cut corners on ones where you may need to take a little longer to get it right.

Looked to me like it bounced forward off his knee into the back of his arm and straight down. This has been a knock on in rugby league forever. Ricky Stuart is the one that needs to be crucified for the way we are playing, not the bunker. We're shit. Still playing the same stupid grindball from 5 years ago while every other team has adapted. It was a knock on but the angle they showed on TV didn't confirm anything. The reverse angle clearly showed the ball was knocked on.

My problem is the bunker takes 5 minutes sometimes on decisions that could be made on one viewing but then in crucial moments they just have one quick look and carry on.

This was to decide the game. Have a proper look at the play because if we were looking at the same angle the bunker is looking at, there's no way you could make a decision on the first angle they showed on TV.

It hit Savage's arm, bounced back and then rolled forward. It's allowed to bounce or roll forward as long as the initial movement is back, and it was.
