Boy I hope the refereeing standards improve sharply in the forthcoming rounds on the Super 14.
In the first round, I can't think of one ref who had a good performance. Not one. Two terrible examples, however, spring instantly to mind.
1. Chiefs vs Brumbies. Mark Lawrence's repeated refusal to allow the No 7's to play their game. He would allow the player on the ground to hold on too long, whilst not letting the flankers attempt to pilfer the ball at all. He topped it off with two unjust yellow cards, one for George Smith and the other for Marty Holah, for absolutely nothing.
2. Lions vs Waratahs. Chris Pollock is fooled by a brilliant one-two by two Lions players and penalises them for an obstruction that wasn't, denying them a potential try. Later, Pollock allows the Waratahs to get away with a blatant obstruction that leads to Rocky Elsom's try. This one more so than the first example had a great influence on the result of the match, and the Waratahs won as a result. Also handed an unjust yellow to a Lions player for an alleged "spear tackle" that never really went past the horizontal. His explanation that it doesn't matter if they were put down softly contradicted the interpretation of other referees, who declined to even penalise in the same situation.
