How would you rate the following former referees during their day:

Greg McCallum, Eddie Ward, David Manson, Bill Harrigan, Kelvin Jeffes, Graham Annesley

I wish most of them only hung around for one day, that's enough time to learn to despise them.

Would take any of them except Kelvin Jeffes over most of the current bunch.

I remember Roy and HG on their JJJ show years ago bagging out Kelvin Jeffes, saying he was making up the rules as he went along in a version of the game known as 'Rugby Jeffes'. They said he went into each team's dressing room before the match and asked them things like how far forward they wanted forward passes to be this week etc.

In saying all of that, I seem to remember the refs then being a lot better than the refs now. Maybe that's just nostalgia, I don't know.

They were under less scutiny. The video ref is causing them to look bad.

I think we all have to accept that people make mistakes. The problem is Bill Harrigan that acts like he never makes mistakes and that his is right even if the rule book doesn't back him up.

In his book he says when he started in 80's he didnt like the 5 metre rule so he use to make it 10. He said it allowed classy backs to shine more. Nice one Bill.

Jadwat has some job at Westpac, last time I heard (well, I read it in a Financial Review magazine).

Harrigan? You have to admit he's 100x better than the refs that are going around today though. McCallum, I didn't really see much of him, other than he had a very big beard

McCallum was one of those refs, who for some reason would go back 12m, and let the players stand in front of him i.e. 10 metres back. Used to have the dullards constantly screaming for offside.

The great thing about Harrigan when he was refereeing, was (a) his fitness,he could get around the field so well,(b)his speed of the mark to get in to great position but most importantly he had the respect of the players. He may not have had a small penalty count but the players knew that if they stepped out of line that he would ping them heavily (4 sin bins at Newcastle that night) .. unlike Hayne in origin.

Former Referee Paul McBane has passed away my condolences go out to his friends and family.

"Rugby league is mourning the passing of former referee Paul McBlane, who died of a heart attack aged 53.

McBlane had battled health issues for some time.

His promising refereeing NRL career in the nineties was cut short due to a heart condition.

“He died in his sleep Tuesday night, he just never woke up,” a friend of McBlane told Rugby League Week.

“We are all devastated – he was a champion bloke.”

Also was a small snippet in today's Daily Telegraph saying Jared Maxwell has been cut from the full time NRL Referees squad. Looks like his first grade career is done then.
