They need to do something radical like that so that coaches don't know what they are doing any more and have to spend years trying to work it out.

It gives space between the two sides so you can see better attacking football instead of this drab one pass off the ruck or taking it up from the dummy half that we have to endure.

And watching an attacking side deep in formation in the backline is also a missing feature from a packed scrum.

Lol there was a kick off late in one of the games last week and the refs pinged a player for being offside and getting involved in the short kick off.

It used to be an instant penalty if you were in front of the restart.

How much of the wrestling is a result of the 10 metres? Perhaps going the other way, back to 5 metres and severely penalising any holding down in the ruck because the defensive line should be set very quickly, so they have no excuse. This would also necessitate reducing the interchange significantly, or going back to replacements instead of interchange.

Go 7.5 metres.

Also, the flop is well and truly back. Saw the Tits penalised for a regulation flop and wondered if Melbourne/Roosters/Bunnies would have been penalised for the same thing, I very much doubt it.

The wrestle is a harder problem but I reckon there are still good indicators (not KPIs). I remember growing up, we all knew when a tackle was complete whether you were tackling or being tackled. Modern players have lost that knowledge (or conveniently forgotten it) and wait until the ref tells them to get off. They then get another second or two to get off. Way too long. As soon as the tackle is complete, require them to get off the player without waiting for the ref's instruction. A ref's call of "Held" should be enough, if they can't take the hint, ping them until they do.

Got interrupted, here's the rest.

The indicators I see all the time are:
1. Players adjusting their grip (usually to around the ball in a wrestling move). As soon as you see a second movement after the tackle is complete, penalty.
2. Players looking at and speaking to the ref while lying on the tackled player. Penalty.

I saw so many flops over the weekend. Then I turned on the footy and there were even more.

For a time that was an instant penalty but it’s been placed in the ignore box. They’ll probably have a crackdown in a year or so. Not sure why they can’t just penalise the blatant shit.

... last year people fell out of their tree when players were being penalised for blatant shit.

We had the chance to clean it right up but the game bowed to the fools who couldn't stand it.... now those same people whine about the refs when their team doesn't receive a penalty when 'blatant shit' happens to them.

There is an argument for bringing in a 3 game pre season with a final with part of the purpose being for referees to let clubs know how the game will be referee'd (eg strictly to the rules) and sort this stuff out prior to the kick off of the season proper.

I would make it 15 metres but also get rid of the rule that the markers have to be square. Allow the 2 "markers" to line up anywhere they like on the defensive side of the play the ball. That would make marker a sort of a specialist job.

Agree.

I was pro-crackdown.

That happened prior to my time on the forum though.

Maybe the NRL should pay loud mouths like Andrew Johns some money to be supportive of the crack down.

Oh the irony a Souths fan complaining about a lack of penalties. Watching them last week was like watching the storm. Wrestling every tackle and constantly marched out of their 20 when under pressure. Would be interesting to see where certain teams get their penalties at.

Lots of penalties or minimal penalties who cares, consistency in the match for both teams is all I want.

To many times one side gets away with the same thing the other side gets penalised for 2 minutes later.

God no. Refs can't judge 10 (they usually have the players back between 8 and 12, but occasionally as far as 15) when there are lines painted at 10 m spacings. Tell them an odd distance like that and just watch the confusion.

Blame Gould and Johns. We have to "just let the game flow".
