Referees are prepared to go on strike in round one next season if the NRL does not agree to a pay claim that would see the top whistleblowers earning as much as $315,000 per year.

Protracted negotiations between the NRL and the referees’ union continued at a glacial pace on Wednesday as the game’s all-important officials pushed for a 30 per cent increase in their salaries over the next four years.

That would see top-tier referees like Gerard Sutton and Ashley Klein have their salaries increased from $180,000 per season to more than $300,000. That would bring them in line with the average wage for a player, which is $371,000.

“They’re moving in millimetres,” frustrated Professional Rugby League Match Officials chairman Silvio Del Vecchio said of the NRL. “We continue to find the NRL extremely combative and unwilling to move in negotiations, caught up in minutia.”

The Herald understands referees are preparing to ramp up hostilities after effectively hitting the NRL with a wet lettuce leaf over the past few months, turning up late to video reviews and the like.

They want 300 grand a year. f**k. Me. Dead.

The likes of Klein are lucky to have a f**king job at all. They don't make tackles, they don't score points, they don't train strenuously every week. They literally run back and forth up the field and handball 90% of their decisions to the Bunker.

Seriously
I heard a thing on the radio about what they get paid and what they have to pay for re: travel etc.

It’s shit.
It’s wonder anybody does it.

What is Greenberg on?

I've had a few mates who were NRL Touch Judges. The conditions are not great. If you have to travel interstate or overseas, you often travel on the red eye flights. meaning if you get a 7.30 pm game, you are on a flight out of the airport the next morning at 6.00 am. You also share hotel rooms like back in school and stay in cheap places.

They can make or break a game more than any player or coach, they are under scrutiny and get the flame more than any player, you cant have a game without them. Good luck to them in whatever they can get! If some of the numpties that play the game can earn $600k I dont see why a ref shouldn't be getting $300k.

I don't think that's what red-eye flights mean. Usually a red-eye flight is one that departs at the tail-end of the evening/night and arrives early the next day.

Still rough though, 6 am flight out means a 4am wake up. If you've reffed a night game your not getting to bed until gone midnight. And end of day for a $500mill a year company, saving $80 to put your best assets on the 6am flight is as cheap as it gets!

Wow a great post from the biggest dribbler on LU!
I'd have no problem with them earning 250k+. They should also have bonuses for making correct calls

On 180k after tax the ref takes home about 122k.

If a ref was on 300k after tax he'd take home about 186k.

If the NRL player average is 371k after tax he takes home about 226k.

Still a pretty decent wage pro rata.

How many days a year would be work? around 100?

Absolutely.

I know it's a free country, etc, and they are entitled to whatever the market will pay. But the players (and now refs) have never got any sympathy from me (not that they'd lose any sleep over my opinion).

With all the constant criticism and abuse they recieve they are perfectly entitled to the money
