Decided to e-mail Dino Vikas in Moscow and ask him about what is happening there. This was his reply:

Daer Matthew,

Mate, unfortunately, what you have read is true, but we are working to get Dynamo back into Rugby League. Alot, will depend on what Mr Kamaldinov does. If he stays, the RRL will continue to grow, but if he decides to follow Rugby Union, then....................the RRL is back to square 1.

Playing numbers are weak and we really need a full time dev't officer to get into schools. I want this position and am trying to get funding or sponsorship to continue.

Future plans include an Under 16 World Championship in Moscow in 2005, but this will depend on Mr Kamaldinov, our president.

If you can help us Matt, please let me know.

Regards

Dino

I have posted on total rugby league forums about setting up some kind of donation section for this schools development position Dino mentions. Any ideas?

Pretty depressing. But as Paley on another forum states, why should RRL be reliant on one person. Surely after a number of years there is more stability than that.

Just a note, I remeber a couple of years ago the preisent of the Russian Rugby League was out here in Oz for an RLIF meeting & World Sevens but didn't turn up to the meeting due to sudden 'illness'. I heard he was checking out the casino situation here and his position in RL is half front for expanding business interests.

Maybe union is in a country where he wants to check out the casinos and there's no league there ;-)

A while ago I posted an idea for raising money for developing nations, based on what Howard Dean was doing raising money on the internet when he was running for president.

You have an icon (say on the homepage of this and other RL sites) which says we urgently need to raise $20,000 to pay for a Russian schools development officer. That icon has some graphical representation of how much has been raised so far - Dean used a baseball bat.

The key is to have a specific amount of money tied to a specific thing and for the contributors to be able to see the progress they are making towards that goal. It isn't just "click here to contribute". When the $20,000 is raised you switch to some other project.

Very disappointing news. I'm not sure where to go with this as my emails to the NRL in the last year or so seam to have fallen on deaf ears.

The issue is pretty much resolved. Mr. Kamaldinov will be sticking with Rugby League.

Yak, if you know something it would be nice if you could let us all know.

The core issue was just Kamaldinov V Locomotiv, its a bit like I guess Fitzgerald and the NRL. Locomotiv feel they should run the game, Kamaldinov, is the one running the game.

That meeting did not go down to well, Kamaldinov wanted Bailey to stay, but anyway from what I've heard in the RL Circles, is the issues has been sorted and Kamaldinov has confirmed to the appropiate authorities he isn't going anywhere.

Good news ,however PW may have a different view ?

How healthy is it that one bloke has such a big influence on an entire sport - as though he owns it, though?

The crisis may be over but the root problem still exists.

My understanding (and I've seen Russian rugby league operating at first hand) is that Mr Kamaldinov doesn't really "own" Russian rl as such. If he wasn't there, pulled out or whatever, the game would go on in its own small way in Moscow, Tartarstan etc without him, just as it did over the past decade and a bit when few in Western Europe gave a toss.

What his cash-rich and politically influential presence DOES provide, though, is a great chance for Russia to take the next step up internationally. It's not an "all our eggs in one basket" situation, simply that progress will be far quicker with him involved than without (unless some other millionaire fairy godmother comes along in the meantime, of course).

Russian politics is a shady business at the best of times, so why should Russian sport be any different? Just one more reason why the Russians are perfectly suited to rugby league, eh? :)
