Reserve Grade

I know Super League has a reserve grade and all but i also read that the French team do not have a team in that.

Do you think the Super League should follow a the NRL and have an U20's or U21's competition that would be complusary for each team??

Was just thinking about last night when watching the Warriors U20's vs Penrith U20's which out of the 34 players playing, 25 of them were born in NZ or grew up in NZ. Would it benfit London, Wales and France??

I would also suggest that all U20's teams would have to be from that local district to help develop players in their area?

Could Super League afford this??

There are two age group comps already, all the SL teams enter and Les Catalans are entering next season. The reserve grade is a bit different as the froggies use their own elite league.

So the UK structure goes as follows:

Engage Super League (Open Age)
Reserve Team Championship (Under 21's)
Gillette Academy Championship (Under 18's)
Gillette Academy Foundation (Under 16's)
Service Area Under 15's
Service Area Under 14's
Service Area Under 13's
Service Area Under 12's

It's a pretty good structure for the League. The Service Areas are purely region based and feed up to the Academy Foundation which has a mixture of Super League and National League aligned clubs.

The Academy Championship is a replica of the the Reserve Team Championship (all SL teams minus Les Catalans)

So at least eight Penrith players were Kiwi qualified yet you'd like the Brits to play only locally produced players in their reserve grade?

The U21s are allowed to play a few overage players to cater for players coming back from injury.
The U21s finished ages ago. It was rubbish anyway, because any overage players didn't feel right bashing up a bunch of kids and the kids were not playing in a physical environment against men so it was hampering development.

Super League Reserve Grade is now an open age competition, but unlike the former NRL system they are not feeder clubs, so there is no issue with players playing their entire careers in the reserves. Any players who are not good enough and never going to be good enough for Super League will sign for National League clubs. I do not really like the idea of U20s. Also there is the Academy competition.

U18s is the 11 English SL clubs plus Widnes and Salford (not Crusaders who use the amateur National Youth League). There's no National Leagues U18 they all use the NYL except the aforementioned two, but there is a National Leagues Reserve grade (with most but not all clubs, though all in one division)

I was trying to point out that it would be good for teams like Castleford or Huddersfield to develop thery own talent instead of sigining Australians and Kiwis every year.

Olus it would help Wales and France on the International stage.

Why havent they made the reserve grade compulsary?

Huddersfield regularly fielded 15 out of 17 British players last season. Castleford's team is full of young players like Owen, Westerman, Boyle and Shenton. They traditionally have one of the strongest youth set ups around. Of course the reserve grade is compulsory.

I agree that pouring more money into development is the way to go but there's no way it will happen because of the obsession with overseas imports, thats where the money goes. It's a joke.

Youth development is the best it's ever been, what are you going on about?

But isn't one of the ideas behind the franchise system that teams will now be more inclined to bring on their own youngsters rather than signing journeymen Antipodeans as a quick fix to avoid relegation? Let's have this argument in six years time.

It is for both SL and NL1 clubs (optional for NL2 clubs)

But Catalans got an exemption to enter their reserve team into the French League to reduce unnecessary costs and Celtic Crusaders got an exemption to enter theirs in the RLC National for unknown reasons, though they aren't good enough for the SL reserve grade
