Residency rule extended to 5 years

There should be a 4 year lock in election period..

On the jan 1st after every world cup , so jan 1st 2018, everyone has to elect a nation to play for,or switch to,providing they are eligible, then they are locked in,no ifs,no buts, for 4 years till after the following world cup...

At least the likes of samoa, tonga, wales etc know they will have players for at least 4 qyears..instead of picking up the pieces every year after the big 3 name train on squads

The rules extend the qualification period for residence to 5 years whilst ensuring that players from developing nations with dual eligibility are not prevented from participating in the Rugby League World Cup.
The way I read that is if one of the big 3 don't want a player and that player has dual eligibility then they can play for the other country they qualify for and they can do it immediately.

It was vague but I think they're going with the tiered dual eligibility plan. It's been on the cards for months.

I can't envisage any problems with this...

It just means Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Ireland, Lebanon, basically every "tier 2" country will have to pick their teams after the "tier 1" nations.

And then we wait for the day someone pulls out of a big three team late and they want to pull in someone from another nation's squad.

It's the international equivalent of first and reserve grade. Except they're playing against each other.

Unless there are more incentives for players to pick their tier two countries over tier one, then it will remain the same.

Increasing the frequency of internationals between tier two countries as some have suggested isnt going to do anything

Players are picking "tier 2" nation..but it doesn't stop "tier 1" nations selecting them anyway...go see the nz train on squad..got current samoan & tongan test players in it

But its one step in the process

As its a chicken and egg issue

We need to play regular Pacific Cup series to generate money to pay the players

Imagine if we could be playing a Pacific Series between Samoa, Fiji, PNG, Tonga Cooks and Niue with RLWC places on the line - rather than a few one of tests

Of course they're going to pick em if they can. And the players can agree or not.

But would you rather play against Tonga and png or Australia and England? No disrespect but Pacific cup is not enough incentive.

I came up with some ideas but no one likes em.

It a crazy thought, I know, but maybe they could also play against Austrlaia, England and New Zealand.

Trick is to put in place say a end of season 6 Nations - then have nations qualify mid year each year to play

Regular calendar of events that generates cash for smaller nations. It's the only way out of this mess. First they'll get some cash from more games and second have more ability to attract sponsors.

Can't blame players for selecting NZ over Tonga, Tonga aren't even playing this summer
