Retiring a Jumper !

Has been said on ABC radio the #7 will never be worn again by the Newcastle halfback ... its been retired as a mark of respect for A Johns.

I understand their love of him, even naming a grandstand after him seems reasonable ... but never again ? ... so in 20 years time we have a champion #9, #6 etc ... where will it end ? ... one day we could have a situation resembling an NFL game ... perhaps one day we move to 3 digits !

Didn't the Dogs retire the #6 after Terry Lamb years ago ? ... I'm sure Daniel Holdsworth wore it this afternoon.

Its going to be mighty confusing for kids in the future.

Jarrod Mullin might turn out to be a SOO standard halfback and where the #18 his whole career !

Its all just a tad insane ... almost to the point where I think the NRL needs to set some guidelines surely.

Oink !

It is just the one game.
You either heard wrong, or Craig Hamilton has been sniffing too many Newcastle fumes (the MOST biased league caller there is)

this has to be ther dumbest idea ever!

FFS , the numbers in league are positional numbers , this is not the NBA where numbers mean nothing!

how the hell did the NRL allow this.

STUPID!

Craig Hamilton went to great length to say it would NEVER be worn again.

I am only reporting what he said.

If he is wrong, then the whole country heard it.

Oink !

Stupid, over-reactionary, Americanised, gimmicky madness

There's already an appropriate way to honour the career of a great Australian league player....an honour that has been bestowed to only seven of the thousands of players from the past 99 years.....

craig hamilton just claimed again that the Newcastle no.7 jersey has been retired for "All Time".

if he was wrong youd think someone would have corrected him from 40 mins ago.

He has to be wrong, otherwise this is absolutely ridiculous. Cant, just cant retire a number.
Hamilton is known to be wrong when opens his mouth.

It's against NRL regs and it won't be bended just for Joey's benefit. They applied for tonight only. Mullen will wear #7 next week.

They won't.

They can't.

Surely.

Imagine, any halfback in Newcastle will already have to be in the Joey shadow, if the poor kid is forced to wear another number then he'll never get a chance to be a player in his own right, IMO.

That already will be the case for a few years... There never has been a #6 quite like Lamb at Canterbury, You'll be hard pressed at NZ finding a player who isn't still in Stace's shadow...etc etc. Brisbane still haven't replaced Langer all these years on. Jersey retirement has nothing to do with it IMO, that is all psychological.

Thankgod...a knights spokesperson confirmed it is only for the one game.

I knew Hamilton was a goose...this only confirms it.

The jersey thing would only make it worse/harder though.

Thats why i think the Knights need to keep Mullen in #7, or another junior. Buying a new halfback is a bad idea, replace him from inside, there is less expectation.

I don't think that Rovelli is in Jones' shadow, nor Roberts. What was Gus saying during the test?
