I have mentioned this a few times previously in other threads, but thought I would create one to discuss it directly.
Currently international RL is not the pinacle of our sport; it should be, but it isnt.
There are many reasons for this, with two of them being:
- the Kangaroos are too dominant
and
- not enough NRL fans care about watching them
To fix this I suggest that the Kangaroos stop playing every year and only play every 4 years at world cups or in a British Lions style tours.
In place of the Kangaroos we have NSW, QLD and an Australian Barbarians Team to represent the other states (they will not be at the same level as the other two, but hopefully in time they can be).
As it currently stands NSW and QLD are more passionately followed then the Kangaroos, however we only see them play 3 times a year and then put them on the shelf.
Changing to this model of Rep RL will instantly generate more interest in the representative side of our game within Australia, and allow the other nations a more level playing field.
In addition to this, it will stop players jumping from minor nations to try and play origin, because the NSW and QLD teams will be their direct competitors.
Let me know your thoughts.
