not when you think it could be a 80min advert on the BBC for sky sports

a win for sky cos it could see more subscription being taken up to see the rest of super league

and a win for the RFL cos they'll be able to use the bbc viewing figures , 2million+ , as a bargaining tool next time around

I'm surprised they haven't looked to do something more with the Challenge Cup which is already separate from Sky commitments. Rather than breaking up the Premiership with dedicated weekends for Challenge Cup quarter and semi finals, play one match a week, mid week on BBC 2 or 3. With the round of 16, quarters and semis there would be a 16 week long program of matches mid year, every week providing a free to air advertisement for the game and the upcoming weekend of Premiership matches.

That's a ridiculous idea.

Well theres already a 2 month gap between the Round of 16 and the Quarter Finals as it stands anyway!

I don't think its such a ridiculous idea, although its definitely ambitious in my opinion its clear that the Challenge Cup needs some revitalisation - some of the crowds from the last round were embarrassing.

i came up with a idea that i posted on RLfans for revitalise the challenge cup...

basically the rounds before round 5 become the challenge shield/plate...the 2 championship teams that make it that far qualify for the challenge shield/plate final,to be played as a curtain raiser to the challenge cup final at wembley, as well as qualifying to enter the 5th round/last 16 of the challenge cup with the 14 super league teams.....that last 16 draw would also be the last draw of the tournament..with the teams drawn and bracketed like a tennis tournament....maybe seed the draw based on the previous years SL league table or just seed the championship clubs..giving them a home draw or something??

challengecupfinalbracket.jpg

theres little or no interest in championship clubs playing SL clubs these days...the little clubs get very little gate money and a nailed on for a stuffing...the average score between championship clubs and SL clubs this year was around 60-12...utterly pointless...lets just have 2 comps running side by side..we can play for the shield/plate and a shot at playing at wembley bringing back the excitement and the crowds....and having the draw bracketed means we could have a razzmatazz media event...newspaper pullout wallcharts etc....

In regards to TV packages, this is what I like to see:
Game 1: Friday, 8:00pm start, Live on Sky Sports
Game 2: Friday, 8:00pm start, Non Televised
Game 3: Saturday 7:00pm start, Live on Sky Sports
Game 4: Saturday 7:00pm start, Non Televised
Game 5: Sunday 3:00pm start, Non Televised
Game 6: Sunday 3:30pm start, Live on BBC
Game 7: Monday 8:00pm start, Live on Sky Sports

Let me know, if it's a bit wacky.

cos round 16 would take 2months to complete
Yep. Whoever said it had to be over in one weekend? The NSWRL was running this format for the Panasonic Cup 30 years ago. Each team still only plays one match per round and only has to backup for Premiership matches, once per round. But the game gets 16 weeks of primetime free to air exposure each season plus a standalone final, instead of two to three weekends of selected televised afternoon games each season plus a final.

i don't think you understand the "magic of the cup"?.....when we all play cup games on a weekend it does create a cup buzz..all be it diminished in recent years.....having a couple of games aweek amidst superleague & championship league will kill " the cup buzz"

Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it'll have a different sort of "cup buzz". Impossible to say unless you try it. But like the game in Australia, the game in England needs money to keep up with the Jonses. It has a limited number of big ticket media assets to play with and the question is how best to use them? The Challenge Cup final and preliminary rounds are two such assets.

theres no "maybe not" about it....it would trust me....

like i said maybe you don't understand cup football cos you've never really had it like we have.....as a oldham fan..despite winning the cup 3 times and 4 times as runners up before the final moved to wembley...i would give everything for us to get to wembley, first born child...wedding....sod that......in the 80's & 90's we got to 5 semi finals...missing out on the 1990 final by a last minute kick through/offside call....which was'nt offside...as a 11 year old i cried for a week....
