"The bassist for the band Slipknot has been found dead in a hotel room in the US state of Iowa, according to reports.
The body of Paul Gray, 38, was discovered by an employee at the Town Plaza Hotel in Urbandale, a suburb of Des Moines, just before 11am local time (2am AEST), police said.
The Urbandale Police Department, which is investigating the death, said there was no evidence of foul play at the scene.
An autopsy and toxicology tests will be conducted later today.
Gray’s widow, Brenna Paul, is expecting his child later this year.
The bassist, also known as "The Pig" or #2, formed Slipknot with fellow Des Moines musicians Shawn Crahan and Joey Jordison in 1995 ...watch video
In 1999 they released their first album Slipknot, which sold more than a million copies.
Known for grotesque masks, the band won a Grammy in 2006 for best metal performance for the song "Before I Forget".
Concert industry trade publication Pollstar ranked Slipknot 18th in its Top 20 Concert Tours list in 2009.
Gray was arrested for possessing drugs in 2003 after police allegedly found small quantities of cocaine and marijuana, as well as two syringes, in his car following an accident.
Though the charges were later dropped, the musician admitted he had taken drugs shortly before the accident."

A sad day for the metal community. He was involved in some great albums.

Slipknot S/T, Iowa, Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses, All Hope is Gone.

I thought so. He was involved in no great albums. S/T was ok, but anything else they came out with was garbage. You also missed slipknots very first album Mate, Feed, Kill, Repeat

Mate, feed, Kill, Repeat wasn't that good, but I did forget to include it as an album of theirs.

Iowa has some awesome tracks on it but isn't as good as the other 3 major label albums.

Great band live too.

Perhaps now one of the 4-5 blokes who just run around on stage doing f**k all can make themselves useful and pick up an instrument??

So says you.

They changed music when they came along and all the angry little kiddy bands out now are here because of them. None of them are close to as good.

Awesome live.

I'm not a fan of their music, and there are heaps of bands that do it better than slipknot. Corey Taylor got nodules in his throat after Iowa and has never been the same.

Plenty of bands in their vein existed around that time, they just had a gimmick that was marketable. They weren't pioneers of anything.

Some people here really are pathetic. If you don't like Slipknot, thats fine, but coming into a thread deidcated to a band member's death and telling everyone how much they sucked is pretty poor imo.

Go on then, name the plenty of bands in there vein better than them when they arived on the scene then. You know the ones that took a hip hoppy type of nu-metal (Limp, Korn, Deftones etc.) and made it as heavy as they did, while having so many fans.

Infact name the heaps of bands now that have grabbed hold of there coat tails and are better now.

Simmo: Agreed 100%.

Looks like the tributes are publicly flowing in from many metal acts, far and wide. Good to see.

There's been a few of metal musicians pass away recently, Paul Gray obviously, Ronnie James Dio and Pete Steel.

It seems strange to be 3 that close together.

Not a slipknot fan by any means but I agree that they did somewhat change nu metal, as well as helping to raise the profile of metal music in the early 00s. To me Slipknot are a great transition band for kids to get in to the more underground stuff, and I think its fair to say that most of us who're in to metal now would have been a slipknot fan at some point in our life or perhaps even still are.

Again, not a fan of their music at all, but they have their place in Metal. RIP mate.
