RL/RU Merger

No, it's not happening. Probably never will.

And if you could leave your anti RU trolling. Obviously RU is a terrible game and we all hate it.

But I'm curious as to what facets of league and what facets of RU would work in a hybrid game from a rules perspective?

If you had to combine the two games and not just choose one set of rules - what would you come up with?

Genuinely interested in hearing people's ideas.

I would combine the codes by firstly playing under Rugby League rules and secondly use RU players to fill the reserves.

Congratulations. You're the first idiot to completely miss the point of the thread! Have a sticker.

Maybe take the contested scrums from Union and then keep the rest of the RL rules.

Contested scrums would definitely make for a change in the way the game flowed. I do tend to respect the way rugby moves so quickly as well. The rucks are ugly as hell, but they do make the game move quickly and without the same stop start we see in league.

Contested scrums have a limited future in RU I think due to neck injuries and potential litigation...

I dont see the difference in the "stop start" of waiting for a ball to come out of a ruck, or someone standing up to play the ball in RL...

I've definitely noticed the way rugby tends to flow. Maybe it's just that people aren't retreating and setting a line after every tackle?

Making srummaging a big part of the game again would mean each team would have to carry a couple of fat merkins who specialise in scrummaging and are otherwise useless.

Just look at the Union props, commentators come hard when they see them link a backline move once in a career meanwhile we have props who kick 40/20's.

Contested scrums are a thing of the past, I don't want them back.

Unlike England, S.A. or NZ, I don't think Australia will ever reach it's full Rugby potential because most of the best rugby/league players in Australia play Rugby League. Imagine the Rugby world cup squad with any number of NRL stars in it.

A lot of RU rucks seem to take much longer than a RL style play the ball. The halfback will only move the ball quickly if the defense isn't set.

not to mention the fact that just about all of the League and Union rep players come from just 2 states, while the rest of the country play AFL

The only thing Union has that could remotely be considered for League is the lineouts. As a way of deciding possession, scrums are outdated and dangerous, and the only way to add safety is to have breakaways to steady the structure of the scrums. That either means 2 extra players (f*ck that) or taking the centres out of the backline - also ridiculous.

In any way, shape or form, except for lineouts, incorporating any facet of Union into League would be a backward step.

Imagine how good the RL international scene would be if the likes of SA, Argentina, France, Wales, Scotland, Italy, Tonga, Fiji etc would dedicate themselves to RL instead of RU.

International game.

Contested scrums, but not like union ones. Union they get far too low when they engage and inevitble collapses. It'd be more a case of bringing back rugby league scrums from the 70's, without the penalties.

Bit more contest for the ball would be nice.

RU has nothing to offer RL beyond its International structure and ability to attract serious corporate support. On the field RL is 100 years of RU evolution, why would you want to go back in time?

I'd be very interested to see rugby league played under 60's rules of unlimited play the ball and contested possession, rather than outright taking stuff from Union

No way. I hope contested scrums never come back to league. It means that kicking for touch is alot more attractive. So instead of the game flowing, we would see scrums after just about every set. Personally that isn't an attractive option.

Only thing I'd take from union is the quick throw in when the ball is kicked out.

If a player sees there's a chance to attack, throw the ball in and go for it instead of waiting to pack a scrum.
