'Rugby league' people got us in the position we are now as an inward, insular sport that hasn't spread anywhere near as much as it should have. We need people who are ambitious, experienced in running big time business and who want our sport to grow to its potential.

Lets hope he can achieve that

The NRL has done well appointing non rugby league people lol so we go again but at least he has been involved running a sport.

The NRL has already run off with its own pacific island strategy as the RLIF was treading water so we now have an England focussed RLIF v Australia NZ Pacific Is. I suspect....that can only end in tears for the RLIF

The NRLs Pacific strategy is to grow the NRL, not to grow international RL.

Current role: Chief Executive, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)

This sends a few shivers down the spine, but in all seriousness, this appears to be a good get. Can't believe anyone would view it in a negative light. I don't think compatibility with the ARLC will be an issue, he will probably get on well with Smith and the independence of the two from historical rugby league ties will be a positive and is just what is needed. Having people like this and not ex-rugby league people at the helm is what attracts serious money and investment.

And based in London, another plus. Not Sydney, not Manchester.

Am genuinely excited with this news.

collier the new boss of rlif

former england and wales cricket board chief executive david collier has been unveiled as the first full-time executive officer for the rugby league international federation.
Collier, who spent 10 years with the ecb and also worked for the international cricket council, will take up the specially-created role on april 1 and will be based in london.
Rlif chairman nigel wood said: " rlif is delighted to have appointed a ceo with 30 years' experience of leading a number of the world's leading sports organisations."

wood added: "david has the highest reputation in the world of sport and brings a wealth of international experience as rlif seeks to build upon the success of the 2013 world cup and the exciting prospects for the rugby league world cup in australia and new zealand in 2017."
collier, who will fly out to australia for the anzac test in may, said: "i am honoured by the opportunity to lead rlif and the sport of rugby league and thank the chairman and the board for their trust in me.
"my first priority will be to meet with the broadest possible range of stakeholders, to develop and commence delivery of our strategic plan and to create an international calendar which reflects the strength of our club competitions throughout the world and the success of the world cup.
"rugby league is one of the most exciting sports in the world and the enthusiasm of the crowds and television audiences at the recent world cup demonstrates the great opportunity which we have to further expand and develop our sport."
collier, who attended the classic 2013 world cup semi-final between england and new zealand at wembley, told a news conference in london that consolidation of the international game will be among his priorities.
"i have already committed that we intend to increase the number of member nations but it is equally, if not more important, to enhance playing standards and the financial well-being within the existing full members," he said.
"in my opinion, there can be no better advert for the game than a competitive world cup or world club challenge.
"if we have a very successful international game and a very successful world cup, domestic leagues will benefit from that, also the international game benefits from strong domestic leagues so the two have to be hand in glove and that's what we need to achieve.
"i really look forward to the challenge. I strongly believe we've got a really exciting future."

Whoever has the role will be limited by how much the RFL and the NRL are willing to co-operate.

If it makes good business sense, I can't see why Smith and the ARLC wouldn't run with it as they have a good financial margin to play with and take a few risks. As for the RFL, it could be a bit trickier but they don't exactly have a history of sticking up for themselves against the NRL so they will probably fall into line.

I don't think anything changes too drastic are on the cards anyway. Just matters of orga/nisation and homogenisation to begin with. And someone to actually make decisions and enforce them, that is the most important thing.

He says all the right things in the inteview above ^^^ re: all the issues we have seen discussed here 1000s of times.

The NRL and Super League clubs have to get away from the me me me thinking and look at the bigger picture.
The union world cup is a prime example of what can be achieved if you put international competition at the top of your agenda

I am not disagreeing that was a shot at the NRL and its leaders from a non sporting background. This guy could be a genius but unless the NRL buy into his vision or he develops a cash stream it will be tough for him.

Letting Dead Wood become chairman , developing their own PI strategy and then deciding to play no post season tests is a pretty clear indicator of how they see the RLIF IMO.

The NRL and its leaders would be dumb not to see the benefits of a full international program.

Smith's not a "pom" old bean, he is Welsh. Wouldn't calling a Welshman a pom normally get you a smack in the ear???

Increased player pool
Increased media markets/rights
Increase in value of sponsorship for the game and individual clubs
Increase in merchanised sales
oppurtunity to develop the NRL live app with a greater membership basis

and that is just of the top of my head

The NRL gets to see stars from other places and cherry pick them, plus all the added stuff like a bigger tv contract, more sponsors, and more fans traveling from different places to watch whatever games we end up with, I see wcc mentioned again.

Hope they finally decide to get stuck into France and realise another pro comp would do the world of good.

It will take a good 6 months+ for Collier to meet with everyone, employ a few managers and begin to look at a strategic plan.
Don't expect to see anything tangible for a couple of years.
But, the ICC only moved into their own headquarters in their 100th year. We're not going too bad.
