Just noticed the 2006 award winners - can someone fill me in on who Chris Sykes and James Matthews were - noticed that there are two awards named after them - I can't seem to remember them but obviously both great players. Can someone fill me in please ?

I wondered this myself but luckily there is a older gent who sits behind us in the season ticket area who know all there is too know about the Roosters.

James Matthews was a goal kicking centre who was signed from the Illawarra steelers- he played very well for a third of the 1992 year in 1st grade then suffered a major knee injury and came back towards the end. the 1st grade missed out on the semi's by 1 or 2 points and big things where expected in 2003. In the off season of 2002 he was killed instantly in a head on collision on his way down to wagga wagga to be married.

Chris Sykes was a player(possibly the captain i think i was told) of the 1992 president cup (similiar to jersey flegg) team that won the comp. he was diagnosed with incurable cancer but played on to play in the premiership winning team - he passed away not long after

Chris Sykes could have been anything his talent was limitless it's just a pity what happened to him. Was a good bloke to.

James Matthews died on Xmas eve 1992. Bizzarely 2 weeks later Craig Salvatori ran off the road within 1 km of the same spot.

Chris Sykes award is for the young player of the year.
James Matthews is for the club man of the year.
