Roosters storm Warriors Fortress

Sunday, May 25, 2008

The Sydney Roosters have run rampant in Auckland defeating the New Zealand Warriors 38-12 at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Roosters for the time being sit atop the NRL ladder after inflicting the Warriors first home defeat of 2008 on their way to a seven tries to two rout despite a lopsided penalty count in favour of the home side.
With a host of New Zealanders in the Roosters side returning home to play in front of their friends and family, they were out to exploit the Warriors who have the worst defensive record in the NRL.
Shaun Kenny-Dowall made himself right at home in the 3rd minute when he flew above Patrick Ah Van to pluck Mitchell Pearce’s chip kick out of the air for the first score of the afternoon. An inch perfect Pearce kick found the flying Kiwi in an uncharitable mood on home soil.
Two minutes later Kenny-Dowall doubled his tally when the Roosters decided to run the ball on the fifth tackle. Willie Mason showed no ill effects after backing up from Origin on Wednesday night when he popped a ball around the corner to set up the second try.
The Roosters combination of Pearce and Anasta struck in the 10th minute through a similar kick chase play from last Friday night. The halfback put in a short chip for Anasta who jumped in between defenders to claim the Roosters third try. Anasta was handed the kicking duties in the absence of Craig Fitzgibbon of the match for a 14-nil lead.
Finally a shift in momentum for the home side gave them the opportunity to hit back and Aidan Kirk obliged in the 17th minute after he crossed in the corner. Logan Swan laid on the final pass from a composed backline move to help the winger across the white line.
Mitchell Pearce produced another fruitful kick in the 21st minute for Setaimata Sa to ground. The Kiwi connection of Sia Soliola and Sa combined for the four pointer as the centre Soliola battered the kick back for his second rower to extend the advantage out to 16 points.
The defecit was cut down to 10 points five minutes before the break when Warriors replacement hooker Ian Henderson darted over from dummy half. The Roosters defence was caught napping and Henderson snuck over next to the posts
The home side was coming back strongly courtesy of a favourable 7-2 penalty count and received their last seconds out from the break when the Roosters gifted them two points that they duly converted to reduce the visitors lead with the half time score 20-12.
The opening 10 minutes of the second half didn’t echo the blistering start that the first had but the penalties for the home side kept on flowing as they received another three on their travels.
It was left to inspirational captain Anasta to break the second half scoring drought when he slid over in the 53rd minute. Anasta ran at the line on a slanting angle throwing a dummy to cross untouched. He converted his own try to give his side a 14 point buffer.
Kenny-Dowall completed his hat-trick in the 67th with a runaway intercept try. The Kiwi winger latched onto a wayward pass and ran 80 metres untouched to well and truly seal his side’s victory.
Roosters New Zealand international Sam Perrett added to the home side’s sorrows in the 75th minute after he reeled in an Anasta kick to score. A lovely floated wide kick by the five-eighth was caught by the winger as the Roosters shoot out to a 26 point advantage.
