Wests Tigers

Coach Tim Sheens extended for 12 months earlier this year when there was talk he was being sounded out by Russell Crowe at South Sydney.
The fact chief executive Stephen Humphreys stretched the deal for only one season is an indication that the Tigers board is not convinced Sheens is the long-term option. He does, however, have huge support from Benji Marshall and all the players.

Distressing news and I hope Humphreys acts quickly to secure his future post 2011...

Good to see he has the support of Benji and all the players ( including Fafita supposedly..)

I'm shifting a little on this one. After a breakthrough year, I think it would be dangerous to make a move on Sheens too early.

I'm not talking about making it to the Qualifier, although obviously that is a factor. But we've finally got a decent playing roster - with good depth across the park.

Changing our head coach in the next year or two would be massively unsettling to the team, and it could take a long time to get back to where we are now.

So, there should be only two scenario's in which Sheens' contract is not extended again:

1 - He announces his retirement after 2011.
2 - We have a shocker of a start to the season.

That said, I wont be surprised if he does get another three year ride on the back of 2010. That's how we roll, after all.

I thought all he had to do to get an extension on his 1 year deal was make the finals this year.

I thought it was Tim himself that asked for only a 1 year extension ? . As for the Souths link, they have been chasing him for some time now so im wondering if that is the reason he took a 1 year deal only.

It will basically by Sheen's call, he finally got us a good result, he has built up a very strong playing roster with a good blend of experience and youth. So really unless he wants another challenge of rebuilding a club like Souths Iam sure he will stay on with the tigers for a few more years

From where I sit I dont see it as a big issue, with our playing roster we should be able to win under most first grade standard coaches. Sheens would be first choice but if he walked away it would not be the end of the world

I'd keep him fighting for a new one every year. He's got incentive to have us going well, if we do so, we keep the roll on, if we don't we're not stuck with him trying to rebuild just to bugger off when it starts going well again.

I like westie's idea, sign every coach to a one year deal with an option for a second year, it shows enough faith but leaves plenty of room if things go south.

I'd like to see Folkes take over at some stage, purely for his defensive structures.

Do you think Sheens would have done anything different this year if the CEO didnt point the gun at his head??? I dont think so, I would imagine he would have had the same selections and same game plans. Its just this year the players were a year older and smarter and we won most of the "ugly games".
As for keeping Sheens on his toes by offering him one year gigs, I really think its more about supply and demand and at this stage Tim holds the aces

I'd have him week to week ... :sarcasm:

Seriously, I have to give him some credit for the way the team performed over the last few weeks of the season & the finals series. There's no doubt that when he's on he can put a good performing side on the field. But what's he doing the other times?

He got you within a bee's leg of winning the GF this year.

All you had to do was beat the Dragons. (the Roosters were always going to choke in the GF).

1 point was the only difference.

In saying that though, some of his selections this year were ridiculous. Why does he insist on having dud players as favourites?

Wests should extent Sheens' contract until the end of 2012. That's enough for now and then wait and see how the team goes next season.
