Will be stuck in Melbourne for our game against the Chooks.
If this game is not live on Foxtel (in Melbourne), does anyone know how to watch it live?

Go Bunnies,

THERE'S every chance, as you read this, Russell Crowe is slipping into a tuxedo, straightening a black bow tie, and warming his larynx in preparations for the 85th Academy Awards, live from Hollywood.

He will stride to the stage at the Kodak Theatre with typical aplomb, singing with the likes of Jennifer Hudson and Catherine Zeta-Jones in a tribute to movie musicals of the past decade.

As Crowe does this, however, there is every chance his mind will be elsewhere. There is every probability it will be with his football team and a tradition and rivalry that spans more than a century.

Crowe's Hollywood-scripted rise as Souths co-owner over the past seven years has only added to the intense feud with the neighbours, who are headed by Roosters powerbroker and Al Pacino doppelganger Nick Politis - a man he has never met. Yet the season opener at Allianz Stadium on Thursday week is already bubbling along as something more, and it's heavy on subplots worthy of Oscar nomination.

Sonny Bill Williams will probably come off the bench and play less than half an hour in his first match in the NRL in five years. Yet if he happens to run into a 109kg Greg Inglis it could be the biggest clash since Alien went the knuckle with Predator. More?

Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce is re-signed, rebuilt and most importantly reborn, which is timely because the 22-year-old upstart on the opposite side of the field in Adam Reynolds, who grew up within a 40-20 kick of Redfern and loathing Roosters snobs, is more than ready to take his NSW jumper.

Of greatest significance, however, is that both teams unexpectedly meet each other in the first game of the year with legitimate belief they can win the critically acclaimed musical otherwise known as the NRL grand final.

Unexpectedly, because only a matter of months ago the Roosters were considered, by many, as 2013 bottom-feeders.

Just before Christmas, new Roosters coach Trent Robinson couldn't tell you if he was coaching a top-eight side. "Ask me in late January," he said. Before late January, he suddenly had a loaded gun in Michael Jennings in his squad. Last week, a former Kangaroos and NSW backrower Luke O'Donnell was parachuted into Roosters training from freezing Huddersfield.

Souths had been in discussions with Penrith before Christmas about securing the heavily-priced Jennings.

While they eventually passed and opted for a cheaper centre option in Beau Champion, the Roosters would see Jennings' signing as a minor victory in a century-long war of player recruitment.

Talk of a Roosters grand final appearance might be premature, but the punters are sniffing the breeze. "They are by far and away the best-backed team," TAB Sportsbet's Glenn Munsie said.

In December, one punter had a $4000 nibble at $21. After Jennings signed, another plonked $30,000 on them at $15. The Roosters have been wound in to $11, with Souths third favourites at $8 behind Melbourne ($5.50) and the Bulldogs ($6).

Right on queue - and with good reason - Souths fans are asking how the glamour club can fit a constellation of stars into a salary cap already bulging because of Sonny Bill. The Roosters will point to the release of Todd Carney and Nate Myles with one and two years respectively remaining on fat contracts.

Not re-signing captain Braith Anasta and the release of others loosened up their cap, helping accommodate the arrival of Williams and James Maloney from the Warriors. Ian Schubert can sort that one out.

Roosters fans will be more concerned about the early impression Robinson has made.

He's probably the lowest paid NRL coach, on about $250,000 a season, but that doubles if the Roosters win the title.
NICK POLITIS

"He was the next best young coach coming through - after Michael Maguire," says one club chief executive. "But Souths already had him."

In critics' eyes, the Roosters are on a spending spree, buying their way out of the ugly corner they'd found themselves in under sacked coach Brian Smith.

Maguire has shown, through his Marines-like pre-season discipline/torture for two consecutive years, that he's forging a long-lasting culture - one that could deliver their first premiership since 1971 this year.Souths officials rarely know or say if Crowe will attend a match, but it would surprise if he's not at Allianz for this one.

Some at the Roosters still laugh about the time Crowe stole a scene from Gladiator, giving the thumbs down as his team put rivals to the sword.

Channel 9 wanted Politis to do the same thing the next year, but he declined. The Godfather prefers to give his orders in private.

THE Roosters and Channel 9 have set the ambitious targets of a sell-out crowd and Origin-like ratings for the season opener against South Sydney.

Superb trial match victories for the Rabbitohs in the Charity Shield and the Roosters in the Foundation Cup have set the scene for a huge start to the NRL season at Allianz Stadium on March 7.

The anticipation surrounding the match had already been heightened because of Sonny Bill Williams' first game in the NRL for five years, but the sudden emergence of the Roosters as premiership threats has ramped up the hype.

Often ridiculed for their modest crowd numbers, there is an expectation the Roosters faithful will turn up en masse, potentially filling the 42,000-seat stadium after a 27 per cent increase in membership.

"This isn't a game where people should walk up and buy a ticket," Roosters chief operating officer Ted Helliar said last night. "We've got an increase in membership, and have reciprocal rights with the Rabbitohs. Ticket sales are starting to really move. We want this to be a sell-out."

Nine boss and Roosters powerbroker David Gyngell has invested heavily in Williams' return to the game, with the network rolling out new promos last night positioning the controversial footballer-boxer as the "lone wolf" of rugby league.

Last year's golden-point season opener between the Dragons and the Knights - in Wayne Bennett's first match at the helm in Newcastle - attracted a rating bonanza of more than 600,000 viewers in Sydney.

It was the most watched regular season game last year, but Gyngell wants a "10 to 20 per cent" increase on that.

"I'm expecting very big ratings," he said. "Maybe not as big as State of Origin, but near on. Sonny Bill Williams is the most talked about footballer in the world at the moment. That gives us the chance to make it 10 to 20 per cent higher than last year, which would be about 800,000 viewers. Origin is about 1.2 million, and a normal Friday night game is about 400,000."

We'll outnumber them again like we've done every year. And LOL at Gyngell actually thinking that SBW will play

My round one team
1. Inglis
2. Merritt
3. Farrell
4. Champion
5. Everingham
6 Sutton
7. reynolds
8. Burgess
9. Luke
10. Asostasi
11. McQueen
12. T'eo
13. Crocker
14. Peats
15. Lima
16. Lowe
17. Clarke
Tyrell and G Burgess unlucky to miss out but Lima is an experienced go forward prop and needs to be there. Clarke is too versatile to leave out and has great leg speed. Lowe is in favour and has played well in all three trials.

I did. I think it will help discussion in 2013 too.

agree... i think rather like the long lead up to the federal election, having a dedicated focus to a cause will ensure that we get some robust debate throughout the year..

that being said, i'm pretty curious to see if rudd does mount a leadership challenge in the next two weeks and what that would mean for funding in sport.. apparently he'd prefer to channel funding into education instead..

that's why i'm voting for abbott.

Unless they have a few bad injuries, this Roosters lineup will make the finals IMHO.

Who knows, we may meet in a finals match for the first time since the 30's. Imagine that game.

On this match, before they had the plethora of signings, I thought we would have enough to get them.

Now, it is more evenly poised to potentially become a game like the two classics last year.

You either leave the ground absolutely devastated, or in the back of an Ambulance with a massive coronary.

Bring it on, I have my tickets, and I can't wait.

We pretty much had the entire Eastern Grandstand last year except for 50 rorter members in bay 35.

Lol of course you did.

Every time there is a big roosters/souffs crowd we get told by you lot how it was a majority of souffs supporters. You guys must really love the roosters because you don?t turn up to your own home ground in those alleged numbers.

Roosters by 70.

LOL.

Let's do a real comparison, on potential Rd 1 line-ups:

Inglis v Mini - Bunnies
Merritt v RTS - Bunnies
Farrell v Jennings - Roosters
Champion v SKD - Roosters
Everingham v Tupou - Bunnies
Sutton v Maloney - I'd say this is a push
Reynolds v Pearce - I'd say a push again, although I know who I'd rather have ;-)
Sam Burgess v JWH - Bunnies
Issac v Friend - Bunnies
Asotasi v Kennedy - Career wise its a Bunnies win, but I'd probably call it a push
McQueen v Cordner - Maybe a slight Roosters win
Te'o v Guerra - Bunnies
Crocker v FPN - Bunnies

Peats v Mortimer - Bunnies
Lima v Moa - Bunnies
Lowe v SBW - Roosters
Clark v Aubo - Roosters

9 Bunnies, 5 Roosters, 3 ties.
