A few shock selections in there in Meads and Crouch. I wonder if there will be any Shock selections in this years team? I think Kaufusi or Pai could get a unexpected spot on the bench. Its amazing how much the team has changed over the course of one season. [/b]

I wouldn't be surprised to see Pai as a shock selection - because he can play in the back row and five eight and cover hooker.

Mind you I'll wait until about 7pm on Saturday night before I confirm my selection.

The whole 2003 Rd1 interchange bench is gooooooooorn, except Vella.

How woeful was our defense that night! Especially Paul Green. Fittler & co ran at him all night and came up trumps every time.

I thought we were a chance after Cayless scored after 3 minutes.

You and Me both.
I was at the game and when Hindmarsh went down The Roosters fans were kissing each other as Hindy was having a blinder.

If he scored from that Charge down we were a big chance.

I talked to Jamie Lyon before the game and he was feeling good.

Otherwise it was a shit night!

Agree Colonel. He's quite a tall lad, taller than I thought by his profile photo. Would do quite nicely at lock behind a monster pack, or from the bench

You would say that 9 players from last years starting 17 will be there this saturday night.

Don't worry too much about last years first game. Just think about our Double Header form

1999 Parra 20 v Saints 10
2000 Parra 16 v Roosters 20 (we were robbed, bloody Harrigan..)
2001 Parra 40 v Penrith 4
2003 Parra 28 v West Tigers 8

We are specials, trust me...

And the Dogs, despite getting relatively easy first games, struggle....
1999 lost to Souths who finished 18th the year before
2000 lost to Raiders who finished 9th the year before
2001 Won (snuck home 14-10) against Melbourne who finsihed 6th the year before
2002 lost to tigers who finished 12th the year before
2003 Won (very poor quality game 34-26) against Souths who(effectively) finished last the year before.

We have good double header form, Dogs start poorly ==== we will crush them!!!!

And don't forget Jason Cayless trampling straight over Daniel Heckenberg to score.
Painful to watch as we let Jason go and went and bought Heckenberg.

OK here is a question for all the doubters and by the sounds of it there are a few out there.

From all players available from this year and last years squad who would be the 17 selected to take on the dogs this Saturday night????

The only person who would be half a chance of making the side which is not available is Hodgson. Of the others who are not available due to moving to another club would not make the side IMO, and to think we played the benchmark of Rugby League with that side in 2003  and we were extremely competitive until the Hindmarsh injury.
This year we play an understrength Dogs side who have had the hugest interuption to their pre season training you could ever imagine.

Don't you ever write the Matters off especially against emermy No1!!!

Some very good points there. I tend to agree because although we didn't make the finals last year, we only just missed out despite having very little depth and a masive injury crisis. Yes we played very well in patches against the Roosters in round 1 of 2003. Infact we were easily the better side up until Hindmarsh went off. All of the dead wood is now gone (Green, Crouch, Heckenberg, Chan, Meads... :D ). Now look at our side this year. On paper it is head and shoulders a better, fitter & stronger side than last year. We just need to translate that into form on the footy park and we're in with a big shot this year.

Crouch was not dead wood

v Storm 12-50 L
v Sharks 74-4 W

What was the difference between the two teams

Crouch played v Sharks but not v Storm.

My judgment of him is not based on the results of the 'team' on any particular weekend but on his individual performances over the whole season. I found that he was very slow, often out of position in defense, he was very slow, offered next to nothing as far as go forward and did I mention he was slow? He occasionally came up with a big hit in defense but thats all he had. This is just my opinion of course but I didn't think much of him.

I'll just ad to that,

In that Bulldogs/Melbourne game in 2001, they doggies were lucky to win that game. Melbourne was robbed, poor refereeing.

So that just goes to show, the Bulldogs struggle in the first round. Oh yeah and also Double Header matches. PB, you mentioned that Souths game where they only just won in the end last year.

What about last year's double header, where they got beat by St.George Illawarra 24-14. Who the were beaten by Manly the week before on their home ground.

In other words, he's crap.

We played better than the scoreline that game, but the lasting memory I have (besides hindy getting injured) is Ryan Cross meeting Burt or Hodgo (can't remember which) one on one after a huge break, two men in support, he dummies and goes himself and gets drilled. Way to blow a sure try that one.

Crouch. Ugh. He wouldn't make premier league this year for us.
