EIGHT STRAIGHT VICTORIES FOR TOYOTA CUP

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have tonight continued their winning ways tonight registering their eighth straight victory, 44-22 over the Bulldogs.

It was the Dragons with eight tries to the Bulldogs four that gave them the crushing victory.

Eleven minutes into the match the Dragons were able to register their first points for the match through winger Chris Astill. On the last tackle five-eighth Scott Rosser elected to put in a cross-kick and Astill was left unmarked and he collected the ball five metres out and strolled over to score in the north-eastern corner. Beau Henry couldn’t convert and the score remained 4-nil.

It was seven minutes later when the score was extended with Astill grabbing his second try of the evening. On this occasion it was a play that went through the hands and it was a miracle flick pass from centre Dean Whare on to the Helensburgh junior who went over to score. This time around Henry converted from the sideline and the lead was out to 10-nil.

The Bulldogs answered back in the 24th minute through winger Peter Tuiafiso. A repeat set gave the Bulldogs a set inside the Dragons 10m zone and after spreading it wide to the right Tuiafiso received the ball and had a clear run to the line with Joe Vickery forced to come in and attempt a tackle on the centre. Matt Minto converted from the western touchline and the score was now 10-6.

The next try came four minutes later and it was front row forward Trent Merrin who scored his first try of the season. It was just a simple short ball from hooker Mitch Rein to Merrin just a couple of metres out and he just had too much strength to barge through the defensive line and score under the posts. Henry converted to extend the lead out to 16-6.

In a game where defence wasn’t the main aspect of either side’s plan the Bulldogs went over in the 31st minute through lock forward Dale Finucane. After scoring the try Merrin was soon the villain when he dropped the ball on the kick return. From that set a missed tackle by Rosser sent Finucane through to score next to the left hand upright. Minto converted with the score now 16-12.

The remainder of the half was all the Dragons with two further tries sending the red and whites to the break in front 28-12. The first was through winger Joe Vickery who went over for his 13th try of the season and the second was after a 40m run that ended in the hands of Brad Hudson to score. Henry converted both tries that gave the Dragons a 14 point lead.

The start to the second half started the same as the first with the Dragons scoring first in the 44th minute through Captain Jake Marketo. The Dragons got a repeat set after the Bulldogs knocked on in the in-goal area. From the return set Henry controlled the set and on the fourth play he took it to the line and turned it back on the inside for Marketo who went over under the posts. Henry converted with the lead now extended out to 34-12.

The tries continued to flow with the Bulldogs closing the gap in the 55th minute. The inside ball was proving dangerous with the blue and whites putting on the same play and sending prop forward Martin Taupau through to go in under the posts. Minto converted with the score now 34-18.

Lock Forward Nathan Jones went over for the Dragons in the 71st minute extending the lead out to 38-18. A movement to the right had the Bulldogs reeling and Jones just strolled through to score. Henry couldn’t convert with the score remaining 38-18.

The Bulldogs managed to get one back but through winger Tuiafiso for his second of the night but it was an individual effort from Whare who broke the defensive line and ran 40m to score in the final minute. Henry converted with the Dragons winning their eighth straight win 44-18.

Young Broncos Annihilate Titans

In one of their best performances of the season the WOW Brisbane Broncos under 20s have smashed the Gold Coast Titans 42-4 at Suncorp Stadium this evening.

The Titans had a horror night with errors and injuries making them easy pickings for the enthusiastic Broncos side.

The Broncos began the second half well making easy metres up field through lock Guy Ford.

Halfback Ben hunt was dummying and darting at the line, which kept the Titans defence guessing.

The Titans fought back as their forwards were hard to contain close to the line.

They failed to capitalise as big Chris Bloomfield coughed up the ball over the try line.

The Broncos made them pay as second rower Kurtis Lingwoodock was unstoppable in his solo effort crashing over to give his side a commanding 24-4 lead 55 minutes in.

A spectacular run up the centre of the field by five-eighth Corey Norman paved the way for centre Rhys Matsen to go in under the posts.

Hunt converted putting the Broncos well ahead at 30-4, with 20 minutes of play left.

The back line was superb as a beautiful pass allowed Hunt to score his second of the night under the posts.

He added the extras taking the score to an embarrassing 36-4 with 16 minutes remaining.

The Broncos forwards remained dominant as interchange forward Tariq Sims combined strength and skill as he charged his way over the try line.

Hunt converted the score blowing out to 42-4.

The Broncos kept their foot on the accelerator as Hunt caped off a great night dummying his way to a hat-trick, putting the score at 48-4 in the dying minutes of the match.

Halfback Kanye Lawton gave the Titans fans something to cheer about as he scored an intercept try right on the full time siren.

Both side struggled to put points on the board earlier in the match, the Broncos had plenty of ideal field position by handling errors close to the line let them down.

A great tackle by winger Jharal Yow Yeh forced a line drop which led to hooker Kurt Baptiste barging his way over from dummy half.

Hunt added the extras putting the Broncos in front 6-0, 22 minutes in.

Baptiste was heavily involved again as he handed off for fullback Todd Murphy to score under the posts.

Hunt converted giving the broncos a healthy 12-0 lead 25 minutes in.

Centre Dale Copley was elusive up field as he dummied and stepped, before Hunt scored right next to the posts making it an easy task for him to convert to an 18-0 lead 28 minutes in.

The Titans were given two opportunities to score via penalties late in the half.

Massive prop Bloomfield would not be denied as he powered his way over the try line keeping the titans hopes alive at 18-4 at half-time.

Toyota Cup hold on for gutsy win

The Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup side have lifted themselves from the bottom of the ladder for now after claiming a 28-22 victory over the Newcastle Knights at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Tricolours went into the game having just the two wins for season but their seven losses were all by 10 points or less.

They were facing a Knights side knocking on the door of the top eight and to make matters worse were down to just one interchange player for the final 10 minutes.

The Sydney Roosters started the better after teenage sensation Boyd Cordner spun away from defenders 10 minutes in to post first points. The second-rower hit the line hard and managed to get his arm free to slam the ball down on the paint. Luke Towers stepped up to add the extras for a 6-nil lead.

Seven minutes later Cordner’s back row partner Ben Murray bagged himself a four pointer when he strolled through a yawning gap. Olireti Samuela fired a pinpoint pass onto the charging forwards chest from dummy half and all he had to do was fall over next to the posts. Towers made light work of the conversion for an early 12 point lead.

The early attacking frenzy by the home side sparked Newcastle into action by the 24th minute when Simon Williams found his way over the stripe. The centre had been threatening with earlier runs down the right hand fringe and finally got over to claw back the deficit to eight.

The Knights struck again through Byron Fruean eight minutes later and after Peter Mata’utia converted the Tricolours lead was cut to two.

Back-to-back penalties on the Knights line gave the Tricolours the perfect opportunity to put the Knights on notice and they did when Grant Nelson touched down. The Roosters took full advantage of the lopsided possession and territory counts to capitalise on the overlap out wide.

Newcastle fullback Kevin Naiqama defused an attack by the home side but held the defender down too long which cost him 10 minutes in the bin.

Murray went about dismantling the Knights defence when he threw a long ball onto the chest of Anthony Gelling just before the break. The Knights were counting down to the break and the home side had a numerical advantage giving the centre an easy passage to the line.

The Tricolours went into the break with a 22-10 lead thanks to a disciplined and dominant display by their forward pack.

The only bad news of the first half was a serious leg injury suffered by Roosters prop Martin Kennedy, which looks set to keep him sidelined for some weeks.

The first half started off on a positive not however when captain Tom Symonds made a bust a split the defensive line to cross behind the posts. The towering five-eighth received the ball from his halfback before stepping his way to the line. Towers kicked true for an 18 point lead.

The Knights were next to cross through Ryan Stig when he was on the end of a 60 metre break in the 55th minute. Mata’utia made a break down the left hand side and found a support player who then dumped the ball inside for the five-eighth.

Cordner was caught high and left the field with a broken jaw followed by Fine Moeakiola with a serious ankle injury.

The Roosters only had one man on the bench for the final 10 minutes and the Knights took advantage of the mounting casualty ward to score twice. First through Mata’utia when he plucked the ball out of the sky and then Ethan Cook but it was little too late.

Manly 33 – Pirtek Parramatta Eels 20 – Full Time in Toyota Cup

A ruthless Manly outfit has defeated the Pirtek Parramatta Eels 33-20 in the Toyota Cup, tries either side of the break followed by back to back four pointers midway through the second half enough to see the home side claim victory.

Daly Cherry-Evans was the standout for the Sea Eagles, scoring two tries and kicking a field goal after he was initially not named in the Manly side for the match.

The Eels fought hard to remain in touch until 15 minutes from full time, when Manly kicked away.

Parramatta struck first through an unconverted try to Daniel Mortimer, however Manly hit straight back through back to back tries to Blake Davey and Daly Cherry-Evans to see them lead 10-4 after 12 minutes.

Nathan Gardner scored a copybook counter attacking try to see the Eels level it up in the 21st minute, The fullback picking up a Cherry-Evans grubber kick 20 metres out from his own line before splitting the defence and winning the race to score under the posts.

The Eagles got their noses in front shortly before the break, winger Mitch Porter crossing out wide for a 14-10 scoreline. They then opened the second half in a similar fashion with Darcy Lussick scoring under the posts after Cherry-Evans broke some flimsy defence 25 metres out.

Anthony Mitchell kept the Eels in the hunt with a beautiful solo try a little over 20 minutes out from full time, Mortimer adding the extras to see the visitors trailing by four at 20-16.

Replacement James Cunningham edged Manly out to a 10 point lead once again with a 67th minute try, while Cherry-Evans multiplied the Eels pain by scoring off a breakout down the right hand touchline, Porter’s conversion making it 32-16 to Manly with 10 minutes remaining.

Domenic Nasso pegged one back for the Eels, before Cherry-Evans finished it off with an 80th minute field goal for a 33-20 full time score.
