Swapping Simmons for Inglis wouldn't make us a premiership threat. Putting Simmons in any of Melbourne, Manly, souffs won't make them any less of a threat. The bloke deserves to keep his spot until injury or form says otherwise. The guy has been arguably our most consistent player for nearly 4 years. And by consistent I mean consistently the opposite of shit. The young guys will get their chances, then if they grab the chance it will be up to Simmons or whoever to fight for the spot.

We need our safe, solid players, of course, but not everywhere. We are already overloaded with them. We need a succession plan; no-one here pretends we are premiership ready this season, but we are competitive. So why keep back younger players with more upside to simply keep a wing spot safe and solid? When Simmons leaves the club, right when we should be really firing up for our challenge, we are then going to just throw all the unproven guys in, just so we can proudly say we were "solid" in 2014?

You seem to be suggesting we do just that.

His point is, and I agree, we are still in a rebuilding year, we will not win the premiership this year, we should use this year to prepare some of the guys that will he around for the next 3-4 years. Rather than doing so in a year where it could really cost us. Simmons, Kingston, Robinson, Plum and potentially Mansour fall in that bucket.

I think if Mansour is on his way, we use that spot to give Nabuli and co a go abd Yeo and Grants positions to trial BMM, Cartwright, Anderson etc.
One or two young blokes at a time won't change the team dynamic.

Exactly Maple. I mentioned 2 examples of top 4 teams doing the same. Are Manly going to win or lose games with Williams on the wing over Hiku? Or Souths with Merritt over Johnston?

Down the track when they want to move said players to more important positions the players are more comfortable.

If Simmons retires & Mansour goes we have DWZ with 2 games. Kev with about 10 and untried wingers. Hardly ideal.

If we want to pick players because they scored a try no one else could, you can make that argument for nearly every candidate for a backline position. Simmons is the one player I can't see scoring a try no one else could.

Simmons is a solid finisher, but doesn't really create anything on his own. His tries aren't freakish or unlikely for anyone else to score. Not like the one Mansour scored against Knights in Round 1 leaving the likes of Beau Scott and Jeremy Smith behind as he barges through half the team to score.

Simmons best asset is his combination with Whare. But give DWZ, Nabouli or Naiqama a few games outside him and they will develop a combination aswell. Before Whare came along, he was just a fringe first grader scoring the odd try. Whare is the reason he turned into a try scoring machine, and we have better talents to make the most of the opportunities Whare creates for his winger.

Simmons won't let the team down. But we don't lose much if anything in taking a chance on younger talent, but we stand to gain a lot by doing so. Eventually I think our whole back 3 will be gone or moved to other positions. There's more talented players with better god given abilities and/or bodies for those positions..

I predict by the end of the season we will have seen plenty of new faces in the team. Does it have to happen next game? Does it have to happen every week?

I also predict that within a season of any junior establishing themselves in the team, half the people here will want them dropped to make way for the next kid who shows any talent and form in the lower grades.

I'm trying to remember what it was about Simmons last week that set off this conversation. Seemed like a normal type of game you'd expect out of any winger in the NRL. In comparison the week before Mansour ran for like 250m and had a million tackle breaks and no-one says anything.

LOL That's not really a prediction - it is based on an acute and accurate observation of the mentality of fans.
