Young Broncos Destroy Tigers

THE WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s have produced a sterling 40-8 victory in Sydney tonight to get themselves within shooting distance of the National Youth Competition top eight.

It has been a great effort after the team lost its first five games. They have now won five of their last six matches, their only loss a two-point defeat to Newcastle.

Coach Anthony Griffin has done a stellar job turning the season around, with the young Broncos now to the edge of the top half of the competition.

Leading 22-4 at the break after two first-half tries to Dunamis Lui (pictured), the young Broncos took control of the game early in the second half when Dave Hala dived on a grubber to score.

Then Dale Copley flew over the line in the corner, his long slide in wet conditions allowing the Broncos to take a 34-4 lead with just over 20 minutes left.

The Tigers got one back through prop Andrew Fifita but the Broncos were home with 18 minutes left.

Bronco replacement Josh Williams scored with 10 minutes left, Ben Hunt’s goal taking the score out to 40.

Earlier, Bronco five-eighth Corey Norman started the match on fire.

He split the defence in the eight minute and jinked his way over, gapping them again three minutes later.

On the run he hooked an inside pas to second rower Lui who flew over under the posts.

Hunt potted both goals and the Broncos led 12-0.

The Tigers struck back almost immediately though, with Jason Schirnack diving on a Robert Lui grubber to score.

In the 27th minute Dane Gagai scored the easiest of tries when he swooped on a Tigers dropped ball and went over untouched to make it 16-4.

The Broncos had a handy break four minutes before the halftime break when Lui ran a hole off Hunt, the proximity of his put down allowing Hunt to knock over the conversion for a 22-4 advantage.

TOYOTA CUP MAKE IT NINE STRAIGHT

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have continued their winning ways defeating the Sharks 34-22 at Toyota Stadium this afternoon.

It is the side’s ninth consecutive victory with the red and whites scoring seven tries to the Sharks four.

The tries continued to come for winger Joe Vickery with the flyer going over in just the fifth minute of play. The Dragons had position inside Sharks territory after hooker Lancen Joudo knocked on from dummy-half. It took just three tackles and Beau Henry ran a short side play and put Jake Marketo through who then just drew the fullback and got the ball on the outside to Vickery who went over in the south-eastern corner. Henry converted nicely from the sideline to put the Dragons in front 6-nil.

It was the home side who answered back six minutes later with left centre Matt Wright going over to score. It was a last tackle play that saw halfback Chad Townsend put in a cross-kick and the ball hit the post that wrong footed Henry Raiwalui and after the ball bounced Wright pounced and scored. Townsend converted and the scores were level at 6-all.

Six minutes later the dragons answered back and it was one of the NRL side’s plays that was used by the young guns. It was Henry who got the ball at first receiver and he found lock forward Nathan Jones who ran a great line and went over next to the left hand upright. Henry converted to with the score now 12-6.

In a game of tit-for-tat the Sharks were next to cross and it was a try that nearly all players played a part in. The play started with the ball being shifted out to the left and as it went through at least a dozen pairs of hands back rower Trent Grubb went over to score. Townsend again scored with scores level at 12-all after 26 minutes.

The remainder of the half was all the Dragons with a further two tries being scored. The first was through right winger Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa with the ball just being sent through the hands and a cut out ball from Scott Rosser on to Fai-Fai Loa got him on the outside of his opposite to score. Henry couldn’t convert with the score now 16-12 after 33 minutes of play.

In the final minute of the half it was Rein who was causing concern for the Sharks from dummy-half and as he darted out from the ruck down the short side he passed it on to Marketo who then put it on to centre Kane Linnett who scored in the south-eastern corner. Henry again was unable to convert with the Dragons going to the break leading 20-12.

The second half started just as the first finished with the Dragons going over for their fifth try of the afternoon in the 42nd minute. A 40/20 from Henry gave the red and whites the ideal start and only a couple of tackles in it was the man who put the kick in that slid over to score. He couldn’t convert and the lead was out to two converted tries, 24-12.

Two tries in four minutes brought the Sharks back into the match. The first was in the 53rd minute after consecutive sets on the Dragons line it was determination from interchange player Ian James that got him over to score. After holding up three players he then managed to continue forward and get over the line. The conversion was unsuccessful with the score now 24-16.

The second of those tries came through Ben Orcher who scored a solo try. He picked it up from dummy-half and stepped by Trent Merrin who then showed too much speed for Raiwalui and went down field untouched to score. Townsend converted with the score now 24-22.

It was again Henry who sparked something in attack to put the Dragons further in front. He managed to slide outside his opposite and a flick pass to Vickery sent him over in the north-western for his second of the night and 15th for the season. Henry converted to put it out beyond the converted try with the score now 30-22.

With just six minutes remaining the Captain Marketo was able to get one of his own. A Sharks mistake gave the Dragons possession 30m out and Marketo just ran a good line and when he received the ball he carried two over the line to score. Henry’s conversion hit the upright and the Dragons had made it nine straight winning 34-22.

Eels 30 - Rabbitohs 22 - Full Time in Toyota Cup

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have scored a pressure relieving victory over Souths Sydney in the Toyota Cup, fighting their way back from 22-12 down midway through the second half to score a 30-22 win.

The win is the Eels third of the season and reverses a 38-22 defeat at the hands of the Rabbitohs in round two.

The Eels burst out of the blocks and led six-nil after three minutes through a converted try to winger Sam Kelso, only for Souths to level it up soon after when Junior Vaivai strolled over out wide.

Vaivai showed some great footwork to post his and his side’s second four pointer eight minutes out from the break, before the Eels counter punched through an opportunist’s try to Albert Kelly.

Plucking an intercept 35 metres out from the Rabbitohs line Kelly skirted the sideline before diving to score just inside the corner post to level it up at ten-apiece.

He then nailed the conversion to put the Eels back into the lead at 12-10.

The Eels were punished for their ill discipline – finishing the first half on the wrong end of a 7-2 penalty count – and it allowed the Rabbitohs to draw level on the cusp of half time through an Adam Reynolds penalty goal.

The second half started disastrously for the Eels, with Vaivai scoring his third try and Kane Morgan also crossing to establish a 22-12 lead.

However the Eels hit back just as quickly, scoring three of their own in quick succession to take a two point lead.

The first went the way off Domenic Nasso, who leapt high to score from a kick, while the second saw some good ball movement through to hands to Taniela Lasalo who crossed wide out.

Youngster Rory Brien then marked his second match in the Toyota Cup by scoring to put his side back in front 24-22.

With ten minutes remaining Daniel Galati scored what would later prove a decisive try, carrying two defenders over the line to establish a 28-22 lead.

In the end Kelly – who’d missed all four conversion attempts in the second half – put the result beyond doubt by kicking a penalty as the siren sounded to secure the eight point victory.

the win was less due to griffin, the coach, and more because the club decided to change their dumb decision to play the best of their 19 year old's in qld cup, not this comp!

Vodafone Junior Warriors unable to hold out Raiders

After letting in a try right on halftime, the Vodafone Junior Warriors headed to the break 12-18 behind.

But, looking to back up their impressive win over North Queensland last Sunday, they surged back into the lead with a three-try onslaught in the opening 12 minutes of the second spell.

Newcomer Sebastine Ikahihifo ran onto a Shaun Johnson short ball brilliantly, scorching past Canberra NRL fullback Josh Dugan for a superb try.

Minutes later a strong Siuatonga Likiliki run finished with left winger Nafe Seluini scoring wide out – with Johnson converting – and soon after Johnson scored himself and converted to give his side a 28-18 lead.

However, the Raiders then took over, putting together a sequence of five tries – Dugan scoring two of them to finish with three for the match – to run out 42-28 winners.

The result leaves the Vodafone Junior Warriors in a share of seventh spot but 11th on points differential.

Gold Coast Titans' NYC side go down to Manly

The injury-hit Gold Coast Titans’ NYC side has suffered a 38-12 loss to competition front runners Manly at Skilled Park today.

The Titans put in a gallant first half performance to be locked up at 12-all with the Sea Eagles at the halftime break.

But defence fell away in the second half as the visitors ran in five tries to notch their ninth win from 11 games this season and remain on top of the Toyota Cup competition ladder.

For the Titans, the result marked their sixth loss from 11 matches this season ahead of next weekend’s scheduled bye.
