St George Illawarra coach Anthony Griffin has named his mandatory 21-man squad ahead of the Dragons' Indigenous Round clash against the Wests Tigers at Bankwest Stadium, Home of the Burramattagal People on Friday, May 21.

Gerard Beale has been named in the centres for his first game for the Dragons since Round 26, 2014. Talatau Amone reverts to the bench with Adam Clune named in the reserves.

Cody Ramsey and last start debutant Jaiyden Hunt have been named despite their HIA woes in the Dragons' Round 11 golden point loss to the Sharks. The same cannot be said for Max Feagai who has been replaced by Brayden Wiliame (calf) on the wing.

Tariq Sims returns from suspension in place of the coincidentally suspended Josh Kerr in the back row, while Paul Vaughan has been named to start in the front row in place of benched prop Poasa Faamausili.

Despite acting as the Dragons' 18th man last weekend, Daniel Alvaro still featured and returns to the 17 in place of reserves-bound forward Kaide Ellis.

The Dragons will wear their 2021 Indigenous jersey this weekend. All 17 jerseys, plus two team-signed items, will be auctioned off to raise funds for the club's Community Foundation.

GAME DAY

Game day guide: Indigenous Round v Wests Tigers

The St George Illawarra Dragons will face the Wests Tigers at Bankwest Stadium on Friday, May 28. This is your Indigenous Round 12 game guide.

Club legend to headline Dragons' Indigenous Round celebrations
The Dragons will proudly wear their 2021 indigenous jersey and indigenous polo throughout Indigenous Round ahead of Friday night's clash against the Wests Tigers.

The Dragons are also blessed to have an Indigenous presence etched in the club's history, including Jamie Soward who is the club's most capped player of all-time (977 points – 39 tries, 398 goals, 25 field goals).

Soward and Amos Roberts also jointly hold the record for most points scored in a match (22) and most goals in a match (nine) alongside former skipper Gareth Widdop.

Former fan favourite Nathan Blacklock also scored 76 tries between seasons 1999 and 2001, including a whopping 27 in 2001 (the equal-sixth most by an individual in Australian premiership history).

Speaking of the man affectionately known as Tingha, the 25th most-capped St George Illawarra player will lead the boys out on Friday, including centre Jack Bird who hails from the Dharawal nation.

In a sad state of affairs, fellow Indigenous All Stars representatives Josh Kerr and Tyrell Fuimaono are suspended for the game.

Hear from Dragons inclusion and outreach consultant Paul Everill and 2021 indigenous jersey designer Johnny Robinson about our jersey and the week ahead below.

A deeper dive into the Dragons' 2021 indigenous jersey

Senior trio helps prevent absentee flux
Gerard Beale has been named in the centres for his first game for the Dragons since Round 26, 2014. Talatau Amone reverts to the bench with Adam Clune named in the reserves.

Cody Ramsey and last start debutant Jaiyden Hunt have been named despite their HIA woes in the Dragons' Round 11 golden point loss to the Sharks. The same cannot be said for Max Feagai who has been replaced by Brayden Wiliame (calf) on the wing.

Tariq Sims returns from suspension in place of the coincidentally suspended Kerr in the back row.

The inclusion of Sims, Wiliame and Beale is welcomed relief for a Red V side also missing Zac Lomax (thumb), Matt Dufty (shoulder), Trent Merrin (retirement), Josh McGuire, Fuimaono, Mikaele Ravalawa (all suspended) and Cameron McInnes (knee).

Jimmy the Jet returns
The Wests Tigers couldn't have picked a better round to unleash James Roberts back into the first grade fold.

The three-time Indigenous All Stars representative has been named on the wing for the Tigers in a huge test for the returning Brayden Wiliame.

With Roberts set to link up with the in-form Adam Doueihi on the right edge, the Dragons will have to be on the ball if they are to contend with a Tigers team who only beat them back in Round 8.

Freeze frame
You can never accuse the boys for not caring. Jackson Ford's reaction to our golden point loss to the Sharks last week says it all.

I’m starting to come around to the same opinion. I mean signing Beale from the scrap heap? McGuire has also turned into a bust, 5 weeks suspended when we really need on the field. Continuing to pick Norman? These are all his decisions.

We’d better win on Friday night.
Beale is a stop gap this year. Signed on a training and trial basis for 21 only..as yet again Hook had no depth when he arrived.
We were dubbed wooden spooners in the off season for a reason.

People seem to forget the mess that Griffin inherited from the Maestro....
Yes that’s true & Hook will get a pass in ‘21 whether we make the 8 or not. My issue is that we’re skidding 1 out of our last 6, picking Norman, Williame etc isn’t working. We’re on a losing run away I’d prefer he played more youth, we’ll be better in 2022 if he would. Sure Tyrell Sloan only 18 but Shaun Sauni-Esau is 22 now, he deserves a chance.

I want Hook to be braver & not so conservative. Another loss this week & surely he’ll be forced into changes.

And a Hook doubter might well argue that selections based on love rather than form & prospects (Norman & Pereira) have probably cost us 3-4 games already?

And now Beale is added to Dad’s Army?

Favourites, hasbeens & sentiment
are dangerous commodities

...in a new coach
in a new era?

said doubter might proffer

If they are not ready then you do more damage than good. Griffin has the runs on the Board in terms of bringing through juniors...I trust his judgement...If SSE hasn't been picked there is a reason....

We currently have a large number of players out...our depth was weak even prior to that...
We are not talking a 1 year rebuild....we have had 8 years of mediocrity....you don't turn that around in 1 season....We currently can barely field a decent team...that's why Beale was bought in...to bring experience until the end of this year....

Re Norman...agree although again you need to fill his spot....I trust Griffin and co on this....Willame isn't working ?? he has been in and out of the side....we just need to get some experienced bodies in the team...

I think the bottom line is we all need to be patient....The NRL via their new rule has pretty much ruined our season.....

I find him not Conservative or he is having a go at different things and youth is getting a shot we seen quite a few people get a start this year
We had our fair share of injuries and youth level as well as first grade

SSE Has obviously got issues at reserve grade level that only be highlighted even more at first grade

Some of the young guys also have hardly played any reserve grade so there’s no point throwing them all in just for the sake of it

issues over the past five or six weeks you talk about have been handling the physicality for 80 minutes and errors that’s why he’s brought in some older heads
This year was always about being patient and just trying to get through the year with our heads held high and no spoon
Norman... Notice Sullivan now being back to fitness getting close
watch this space!

Amen. Peoples delusions on this forum amuse me.

We are literally missing half of our starting side through injury and suspension, some would argue that the new crack downs have been most felt in our side. Fui, McGuire, sims etc being suspended.

yet I cannot remember a time during Mcduds reign that we have shown more heart and passion for the jersey, which was typified by Birds emotions at the end of the sharks game.

we are a side on the rebuild and were tipped for the spoon, anything close to the 8 is a win

While on this, it's good to hear reports about young, up and coming players, but at the same time you have to be realistic. People post like they are going to be the next Graeme Langlands or something. Been in this forum a long time and heard about the next great thing coming through so many times only for the player to play one or three NRL games or never make it at all. Hook and his team would be looking at these players all the time and as Getsmarty says he has a proven track record in developing young players. I will trust that experience and see where the team is in another 1-2 seasons. That will be the real test.

Not sure if Cody will play this week and the young prop JHunt also.
Given the make up of the squad announced yesterday, i can see:

Bird to fullback
Amone to centre
Clune on the bench
Ellis on the bench

All on assumption that Cody and JHunt dont pass the HIA protocols.

Interesting that JP shifts to the right wing with Williame on the left.
