Young Broncos Beaten On The Bell

THE WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s team have been beaten 28-26 in the final minutes of tonight’s Toyota Cup match in Mebourne.

Storm halfback Luke Kelly jinked his way over with two minutes left, the conversion consigning the young Broncos to defeat in a game they threw away.

The Storm had brought it back to 20-10 11 minutes into the second half when Blake Leary scored. Gareth Widdop converted and the pressure was on.

The Storm then hit the front quickly through tries to Josh Jerome and prop Jesse Bromwich, with Widdop converting both tries to make it 22-20.

But the Broncos managed to stem the bleeding with 11 minutes left when Dale Copley beat a defender with footwork and went over out wide.

Ben Hunt kicked the goal and the Broncos had rested back the advantage 26-22 until the Storm grabbed their late match winner.

Earlier, the Broncos opened the scoring in the fourth minute when try sneak Dane Gagai (pictured) went over.

The conversion was missed and the Storm answered in the 10th minute through Jerome to make it 4-all.

The visitors were back in front in the 17th minute when Kurt Lingwoodock crashed through some scrappy defence.

Hunt raised the flags and the Broncos were on top 10-4.

Then a long break from Dale Copley was rewarded when fullback Todd Murphy burrowed over from a quick play the ball for 14-4 after 27 minutes.

Some unbelievable play from Murphy gave the Broncos a 20-4 halftime lead.

Murphy chased a Hunt grubber and in a Greg Inglis-like move flicked the ball back from over the Storm deadline for Hunt to force the try.

WESTS TIGERS BEAT PENRITH 34-10 IN TOYOTA CUP

Wests Tigers recorded a 34-10 victory over Penrith Panthers in the Toyota Cup match at Leichhardt Oval tonight.

The win takes Wests Tigers to 15 points and in equal fourth position.

The only sour note in the win was news that promising prop Aaron Woods has suffered an ankle injury.

Wests Tigers opened the scoring in the third minute when centre Joel Wisbey crashed over in the corner on the hill side for a 4-0 lead.

Full-back Jake Mullaney failed to convert the try from the sideline.

Penrith levelled in the 25th minute when the halves combined with second-rower and captain Daniel Penese to put on a runaround play for full-back Zoram Watene to race to the corner to beat the cover defence to score.

Five-eighth Stirling Seijka converted the try from the sideline to give Penrith a 6-4 lead.

Wests Tigers regained the lead when winger Sama Sauvao scored behind the posts after some good lead up work by Wisbey. Mullaney converted the try for a 10-6 lead after 32 minutes.

The score remained that way to half-time.

2nd Half

Wests Tigers ran away with the match in the second half through tries to Leivaha Pulu, Darren Nicholls, Jason Schirnack, Andrew Fifita and Monikura Tikinau.

Mullaney kicked three from seven goals for the match.

Sam Jones scored Penrith’s lone try in the second half.
