On fire - Vodafone Junior Warriors 34, Newcastle 6
The Vodafone Junior Warriors produced their most impressive performance of the season in overpowering Newcastle 34-6 in tonight’s 14th-round NYC encounter at Mount Smart Stadium.

Scoring six tries to one, the home side completed back-to-back wins for the first time since its third and fourth round victories over Brisbane and South Sydney.

With two wins and a draw in their last three games, the Vodafone Junior Warriors have leapt to sixth spot on the NYC ladder as they head into their second by of the season.

They started well tonight with a ninth minute try to winger Thomas Ah Van and, while they soon conceded a try for the score to be locked up 6-6, they continually built pressure forcing no fewer than five goal-line drop outs in the first half.

The last of them returned a dividend when the repeat set produced a36th-minute try from close range for captain Elijah Taylor.

The narrow 12-6 halftime lead quickly grew to 22-6 with two tries in the opening 11 minutes of the second half, first Ah Van scoring his second off a Shaun Johnson kick and then Johnson himself laying on a chip and chase special to score near the posts.

There was another one-two strike inside the last eight minutes.

The first in the 72nd minute followed yet another goal-line drop out, the ninth of the match for the Vodafone Junior Warriors.

Interchange prop James Gavet brought the ball back strongly, off loading superbly around the back of a defender for centre Rusty Bristow to surge 35 metres for a try Johnson again converted.

From the restart the Vodafone Junior Warriors were in again, winger Bill Tupou getting ball on the outside, centre kicking and collecting the ball when it ricocheted off one of the goal posts for his 24th try in 31 NYC matches (and his 10th in 12 games this year).

The Vodafone Junior Warriors now have 15 points from six wins and a draw in their first 13 matches.

Toyota Cup improve but come up short

The Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup side has suffered a 34-22 defeat at the hands of the Gold Coast Titans on Saturday afternoon at Bluetongue Stadium.

Both sides came into to the contest sitting outside the eight with the Roosters in second last and the Titans lingering in tenth place coming off the back of a six match losing streak.

Each team had struggled to put on the points with the Tricolurs posting just one try in their last two outings and the visitors had scored just 28 points in three.

It looked like luck had jumped on the Tricolours side form the kick off when the ball bounced into touch.

The home side could not capitalise but the Titans did from the back off the scrum through Travis Drought. The visitors picked up possession on the halfway line from a Rooster dropped ball and Jordan Rankin provided the kick which took a wicked bounce giving Sam Brunton little chance of stopping the flying half. Rankin converted for a 6-nil lead.

Ryan James lead the Titans charge down the short side in the 21st minute when he steam rolled his way over the line. The second rower crashed into the defence from three metres out and was unstoppable as they bounced off him.

Olireti Samuela wrestled over from short range catching defenders unaware and perhaps the referee who awarded the try despite the ball appearing to miss the chalk. It was just reward however with the home side starting to get a roll on up the middle and the crafty dummy half caught them out to bridge the gap. Luke Towers knocked the ball between the posts to keep the Roosters on track.

Roosters captain Dylan Sharp made a try saving tackle but it was to no avail as the Titans eventually extended their lead in the next play through Kayne Lawton. The Titans hooker opted to go himself from the play the ball and burrowed his way under some soft goal line defence. Rankin kicked straight again for a 12 point lead.

The Titans lost the ball ahead two minutes from the break and Jerome Leolahi made them pay. The Roosters lock did his best to breathe life into the home side’s aspirations of pegging back the margin with his 39 minute effort. Towers conversion attempt was waved away as the sides went into the break eight points apart.

It took the Titans just six minutes after the restart to add to their tally when James crossed for his second. This effort was easier for the burly second rower who strolled through an open path to the line. Rankin kept his 100 per cent record intact.

Draught also bagged a double just five minutes later and after Rankin’s wayward conversion attempt scoring dried up for 17 minutes.

That was until a brilliant team try on the last tackle to Isaac Maliota sparked a potential comeback from the Tricolours. The ball was put through the hands and when the front rower got hold of it he showed some class to get the ball down. Towers conversion attempt reduced the gap to 12 points with 12 minutes to play.

The Titans put an end to the fight back when former Roosters 20s player Dominique Peyroux scooted through a gap. Rankin’s radar was back on target to extend the margin back out to three converted tries.

Towers tried as hard as ever but it was too late to get the Roosters back in the game with an intercept leading to a try in the dying seconds. He converted his own effort to finish the home side off on a positive note.

A completion rate of just 50 per cent was the Roosters main enemy on an afternoon where holding onto the ball could have seen them post more points, or more importantly not conceed them.

DRAGONS TOYOTA CUP WIN IN 32-30 NAILBITER

On an overcast and windy afternoon at WIN Stadium, the Dragons Under 20’s defeated a brave Cowboys outfit 32 – 30, after leading 28-6 at half-time.

An early knock-on by the Dragons, gave the Cowboys a great attacking chance in the first two minutes, yet the Dragons goal-line defence held strong.

The Cowboys then gave away a penalty for an infringement in the ruck, and with a full set of 6 on the Cowboys line, Dragons hooker Mitch Rein scooted from dummy-half, beating 3 defenders to score near the post. The try was converted by Beau Henry. Dragons leading 6 – 0.

After a beautifully worked move in the 13t minute, the Dragons spun the ball wide, with the ball eventually finding Joe Vickery on the wing. Beau Henry converted with a quality conversion from the sideline to take their lead to 12 – 0.

After having virtually no ball in the opening 15 minutes, the Cowboys big number 11 Troyden Waterie stepped 2 players on his own 40m line, before putting fullback Wayne Ulugia away who ran 60m to score in the 19th minute. Wateri converted the try for a 16 – 6 scoreline.

The Cowboys looked to be working their way back into the game, with a few good sets. However after back-to-back sets on the Cowboys line, quick hands saw the ball find Joe Vickery on the wing who dove outstretched to score and take the Dragons lead to 16 – 6.

In the 35th minute Dragons front-rower Trent Merrin sent replacement hooker Cameron King away with a well-timed offload. As the Cowboys looked to re-group, the ball was spun wide, before fullback Henry Raiwalui, stepped back on the inside, showing great illusiveness to beat a number of players and scoring under the posts. The conversion was successful by Beau Henry, stretching their lead to 22–6.

With 30 seconds to go in the second-half, fullback Henry Raiwalui, scored a brilliant try almost directly under the posts. Beau Henry converted to make it 28-6.

Although the Cowboys showed glimpses of form in the first half, it was the Dragons that had most of the running and with doubles from Joe Vickery and Henry Raiwalui, it looks to be a tough ask for the Cowboys to come back from a 28-6 half-time deficit.

7 minutes into the second half, with the Dragons attacking the Cowboys line, Cowboys five-eight Michael Parker-Walshe stopped a Dragons grubber with his foot, before regathering and sprinting 80m to score under the posts. The conversion attempt was successful by Ulugin. Dragons 28, Cowboys 12.
.
It wasn’t long before the Dragons hit-back, with a strong try to winger Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa, who carried 3 defenders over the line to score in the north-eastern corner. Conversion attempt was unsuccessful by Henry, Dragons leading 32-12.

Only 4 minutes later and the Cowboys hit back again, through a close-range try to Cowboys second-rower Chris Maclean. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Dragons still lead 32-16.

The Cowboys continue to fight their way back, with a quick try to centre Jared Huston. Conversion attempt was unsuccessful, meaning the Dragons are still 2 converted tries ahead. Dragons 32, Cowboys 20.

Another try to the Cowboys, with hooker James Segeyaro crashing over to make it 32-24. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Cowboys are looking dangerous, with continuous raids on the Dragons line.

The Dragons line eventually cracks with Cowboys lock Dane Hogan scoring near the posts in the 37th minute. Conversion successful, Dragons now lead cut to only 2 points.

Tigers 24 - Eels 18 - Full Time in Toyota Cup

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels lost to the Wests Tigers by 24 points to 18 in an error ridden and at times spiteful Toyota Cup clash at Parramatta Stadium.

The Eels led at one point in the first half and trailed by just two at the break, only for two tries in three minutes early in the second forty to shut them down.

Kicking was the difference in the finish, with Jake Mullaney finishing with four from four while Nathan Gardner could only manage one from his four attempts.

Mullaney and Tigers second rower Jason Schirnack shared the honours for the victors with 12 points each, Schirnack crossing for three tries while Mullaney scored one in addition to his four conversions.

The Tigers took advantage of a wobbly start from the Eels to claim an early lead through a converted try to Schirnack. But by the tenth minute the Eels had regained composure with Brad Graham touching down wide out to narrow the Tigers lead to 6-4.

Gardner then scored and converted to put the Eels into the lead at 10 points to six, however by the end of the half the Tigers had reclaimed the ascendency with Schirnack scoring again.

Mullaney converted both Tigers tries to make it 12-10 at the break.

Flimsy defence on the fringes coupled with some outstanding offloading from five eighth Robert Lui produced two tries in three minutes for the Tigers after the resumption, Mullaney scoring the first and Schirnack the second for a 24-10 lead with half an hour left to play.

The Eels put themselves back in contention with a well worked try to Graham 12 minutes out from full time, however Gardner was unable to add the extras, leaving the home side trailing by 10 points.

Gardner narrowed the buffer to six with his second try of the evening three minutes from time, but again missed with the conversion, allowing the Tigers claim a 24-18 victory.
