Changes for Friday night Raiders

15/03/2011 3:04:40 PM

The Canberra Raiders have been forced to make some changes for their team on Friday night against the Brisbane Broncos, with injury to skipper Alan Tongue and a one week suspension for prop Brett White.
Tongue will have scans on his shoulder this afternoon and is expected to miss between 4-6 weeks, while White has taken the early guilty plea for lifting his knee and will miss the clash against Brisbane.
The injury to Tongue gives Travis Waddell a chance to come back into the top squad from the bench with Glen Buttriss moving to the starting line-up, while White’s suspension allows Josh Miller to come back into the team also on the bench.
Matt Orford has been named at halfback again this week and is likely to take his place on the field after recovering from an abductor strain, but Josh Dugan is set to miss another week with his calf injury.
This sees David Milne retain his place at fullback for the Green Machine, with last week’s debutant Sam Williams moving back to the Toyota Cup to allow Orford to take his place at halfback.
Bronson Harrison and David Shillington have been named as Co-Captains for the match.
Raiders Coach David Furner said the changes to the team haven’t been ideal, however he was confident his team would not lose much momentum from the big win against the Sharks on Sunday.
“It’s a short turnaround for us so we have to make sure we have seventeen guys on the field who are fit and ready to play,” Furner said. “We’ve lost Tonguey and Whitey, but it gives Travis Waddell and a fresh Josh Miller the chance to come in and make an impact.”
Kick-Off for the match is 8.30pm.

The early reports suggested Orford wouldn't be able to make the game due to our short turn around. So wouldn't be surprised to see Williams in there again.

Id rather give Orford another week to be 100% fit. I dont think we should have any trouble beating the Broncos ,not trying to sound cocky , but our forwards should steam roll them and from there the backs should have space.

May I say, Brett White getting suspended for that is a joke.

I would have left Sam Williams at half back, and given Orford a run with SLM. Sam was terrific on debut last week.
IMO, White had to cop a week, if King copped one. He doesn't need to lift his knee. David Milne is a good replacement for Dugan. No need to play Dugan if he is not 100%. Too valuable a player..
The Raiders have the wood on Broncos, especially at Canberra Stadium....No 2 coming up...

Dugan won't be put in the way I hear it, I would prefer we get him 100% for the games which we need more strike power in... Milne is more than an able replacement.

Willing to give Orford a chance but f**k me, with the way Williams played so far, I don't think Orford would have to slip up much to lose the spot... That said young players are generally very inconsistant... Look at some of the other young halfs around... brilliant one week, beyond terrible the next (not saying Williams would be, just a common occurance).

And yes, as I said in the other thread that knee thing was a joke... It didn't make contact so how is it raising a knee even? What if I someone does some leg work on the side line before going on the field will they get suspended for attempting to hit someone? Considering headbutting someone on purpose and with intent is apparantly only worth ONE week on the side line and King's effort with almost killing someone with his knee is worth the EXACT SAME as Whites... f**king pathetic... New year, same bullsh*t with the judicary...

Sorry to highjack but The choosday game on fox just then was Can V New from 1994 Where Mullins scored 4 trys! So Awesome!

made me see a big similarity between a young Wiki and Thompson, of course his eventual move into the forwards could see his career mirror Wiki's pretty closely (if we're lucky).

AND if Gallen had done the same thing as White on Sunday, and flattened McCrone, would your opinion be the same as outlined???
The Raiders staff have huge opinion of Williams. He wasn't mentioned in the lead-up to keep the media away from him..Worked. He had a blinder. Don't think he will be under the radar for too long though....

Yep. The damage was done by Kelly's teammate, who inadvertently pushed his head into contact with White's shoulder. That's what knocked Kelly out.

The knee didn't touch him.

Dropping Williams correct call: Daley

Canberra were right to drop emerging star Sam Williams from their NRL side despite the youngster's outstanding debut in last week's win over Cronulla, Raiders legend Laurie Daley believes.

The 19-year-old Williams received a late call-up from first-grade coach David Furner to take on Cronulla last week after Matt Orford was a late withdrawal with a groin injury.

In just one match, Williams showed why he is regarded as a long-term halfback option for the Raiders club, however Daley backed the decision to drop the Toyota Cup star for 32-year-old Orford's return against Brisbane Broncos.

"I think it's the only decision the Raiders could have made," Daley told Fox Sports News in his Monday night segment, The Daley NRL Review.

"When you've got a world-class player in Matt Orford you have to put him in your football team; he will improve them as a club and improve them as a side.

"It's always tough when you're a youngster coming through, you want to play first grade, you've had an outstanding debut.

"But it's always difficult to rise for game two and game three as a youngster ... and the more you play in the NRL the more opposition teams start to learn your weaknesses."

An injury cloud over Orford, the 2008 Dally M Medallist, means Williams might not have to wait too long for another crack in the top grade - a call Daley believes coach Furner would not hesitate to make after watching the the No.7's debut that included a classy 40-20 kick.

"But the best thing about it is that they have something there if Matt Orford does get injured," said Daley, a former Kangaroos and New South Wales international.

"(But) this is a good way to bring young Sam along slowly, give him a little bit of a taste of first grade, then put him back down to the 20s, let him develop his game and learn the things that are needed when you step up to that level."

While the Raiders are strong favourites for Friday night's match with injury-hit Brisbane Broncos, Daley's former Kangaroos teammate Gary Belcher said it was too early to draw big conclusions about the prospects of the current Green Machine.

"I'm sure David Furner would have stressed to his players not to get too carried away with the victory," Belcher told foxsports.com.au.

"Cronulla were really poor ... they’ve (Canberra) got a bit more of a test on Friday night against the Broncos."

Fox Sports commentator Belcher was also impressed by Williams's first-up display, but pointed to the performance of five-eighth Josh McCrone as the biggest positive to come out of Canberra's trouncing of the Sharks.

"Josh McCrone had a great game as well ... it's great that he can step out of the shadow of Terry Campese why Campo is injured," he said.

"McCrone played more of a dominant running role, rather than just trying to get on the outside all the time.

"I was impressed with him and certainly young Sam Williams who looked good as well."

More by good luck than good management. The Club obviously thought he was guilty..otherwise they would have contested it,

You cant raise a knee when running at the defence. Craig Smith continually got penalised for it. Its a bad technique which has the potential to hurt someone.
It annoyed me when they kept mentioning the knee and Kelly's injury , not related at all. But 1 week for the knee is ok by me , the headbutt deserved alot more not just an extra week on what White got.

Also Gardner should of been penalised for his tackle on Sammy. Why nothing has been done about it baffles me.

Just the whole Sam Williams thing.

I still think that regardless of what happens he should be the #2 to Orford for the next 2 seasons.

Yes, he is the goods. But he doesn't strike me as a moron. He strikes me as the kind of kid that knows he can learn a hell of a lot from Orford, and who will have a 12 year+ first-grade career in Canberra if he bides his time.

Ive been very impressed with his attitude and the manner he presents himself in interviews , even last year when interviewed. He seems a very level headed smart kid. Something different.
