Match preview

Rugby league in modern times has chucked up a number of rivalries that result in classic encounters at almost every meeting. One of these such encounters will occur out at Penrith this Sunday afternoon.

The most memorable match that these two teams have played in was the 2003 grand final, said by many as the best of all time. Not that it means a lot now, in a new season, but premiership matches have also been a breeding ground for this rivalry.

Since 2000, honours have been pretty much split between the two teams, with 11 games played and the Panthers getting home in 6 of these games.

PANTHERS: Very flat and rusty against the Sharks last week, but still managed to stay in the contest. Glimpses of brilliance in attack, and defence was good in patches. Definitely room for a lot of improvement, but no need to be at panic stations yet.

ROOSTERS: Could have become the victim of a massive upset at the hands of Souths, but scrambled into gear in the second half to record a relatively comfortable victory. Seem to be showing no real post-Freddie effects at this stage.

Being at home will definitely lift the Panthers in this encounter, and it will be a full house. But the Roosters will be keen to show that they are still a force to be reckoned with after the retirement of Fittler.

The battle of the backlines should be a beauty, with plenty of points in both of the back fives. But any match is usually fought and won in the forwards, and both teams look evenly matched in that department.

Whilst this match has not been given official match of the round status, I think that the by-product will do exactly that.

A classic is in the making at Penrith Stadium this Sunday, and it will be close.

Panthers by 4 (in golden point).

Run hard, control the ball, kick and chase hard. This is what will win us this game.

Can't wait to see a live game it's felt far to long coming.

I think the Panthers will win rather convincingly. This is why....

Against the Sharks they struggled all game, their new wing combinatin seemed to work but the ball control wasn't there. They ended up losing in a close contest to a side who I consider one of the dark horses for the season.

The Roosters basically sucked. They were losing by 12 until someone reminded them that they were playing Souths. I don't think they can improve from their last start and can;t see them posing a threat.

The Forwards will be a massive tale but the halves combination will decide the encounter. If Gower gets his act together this round with the help of the crowd I can see a massive total mounting up.

Panthers by atleast 12

I cant wait to stick it to those pretty boys from Bondi. Hell..............I might even leave my position on the hill hin front of the ladies toilets and venture down to the fence to really give it to 'em.

I just hope it's not too hot, so fibro can get the black beanie and bomber jacket on for the occasion.

Panthers by 14.

Penrith always lifts for the goosters.......as do our fans... :D

There is a mass of ill feeling between these 2 sides and our guys always lift in intensity and
incentive to win when these matches come around.

I love it when we play them at Penrith......the atmosphere at the ground is amazing. So much
better than when we play them anywhere else. I can't wait.

Gower and Rooney were both returning from injury and playing their first matches in a long while
at Cronulla, and Swain is returning from about as serious an injury as you can get, and definitely
needs a few weeks to settle back in to the swing of things, and Ben Ross was also only playing his
second game back after a very long lay off with injury. Not to mention the team having to get
used to having Franze and Clayton there instead of Girds and Whatuira, and the big hole to fill
where Lang used to be.......it was never going to all come together in one competition match.

I reckon our guys will improve more with every passing week, and I'm not the least bit worried
about their performance against the Sharks. A little disappointed in it....yes.....but worried by it........no.

I have faith that at home this Sunday we will see a huge improvement on last week, both in skill
level and enthusiasm, and with the home crowd behind them, they should be able to win this one by
at least 6 or more.

GO THE MIGHTY PENRITH PANTHERS ALL THE WAY IN 2005 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

You've beaten us in a GF. That's one game but what other big matches have you beaten us in? The head to head suggests that the Roosters have it all over Penrith. The last time we played you in a premiership game we annihalated you.
