Match preview
Rugby league in modern times has chucked up a number of rivalries that result in classic encounters at almost every meeting. One of these such encounters will occur out at Penrith this Sunday afternoon.
The most memorable match that these two teams have played in was the 2003 grand final, said by many as the best of all time. Not that it means a lot now, in a new season, but premiership matches have also been a breeding ground for this rivalry.
Since 2000, honours have been pretty much split between the two teams, with 11 games played and the Panthers getting home in 6 of these games.
PANTHERS: Very flat and rusty against the Sharks last week, but still managed to stay in the contest. Glimpses of brilliance in attack, and defence was good in patches. Definitely room for a lot of improvement, but no need to be at panic stations yet.
ROOSTERS: Could have become the victim of a massive upset at the hands of Souths, but scrambled into gear in the second half to record a relatively comfortable victory. Seem to be showing no real post-Freddie effects at this stage.
Being at home will definitely lift the Panthers in this encounter, and it will be a full house. But the Roosters will be keen to show that they are still a force to be reckoned with after the retirement of Fittler.
The battle of the backlines should be a beauty, with plenty of points in both of the back fives. But any match is usually fought and won in the forwards, and both teams look evenly matched in that department.
Whilst this match has not been given official match of the round status, I think that the by-product will do exactly that.
A classic is in the making at Penrith Stadium this Sunday, and it will be close.
Panthers by 4 (in golden point).
