Thanks very much Snappy for setting up the thread.

That team list looks very uninspiring.

Gee. Wonder what sort of kicks the Bulldogs halves will be putting up this game, and to whom? Hook once again rewarding mediocrity by picking Maranta over Kahu after the disastrous Melbourne game.

Looking at that team, and Griffin's selection policy, I reckon he's the sort of bloke who eats meat and two vegetables every night.

What ya talking about Dazza. The club are telling us Maranta is a bomb specialist.

http://www.broncos.com.au/news/2014/08/05/bomb_defuser_gets_another_chance.html

To be fair Maranta has been very safe under the high ball and quite reliable in general. He had that one very bad game. The problem for Maranta is he doesn't have any attacking talent and has no x-factor, so if he wants to promote himself as Mr Reliable then unfortunately he couldn't afford that game against Melbourne. Fortunately for Maranta, Hook is still the coach.

Just lucky that he is up against Bulldogs wingers who display the same talents.

Another "even if we made the finals" talk really.

It would need to start now like it did for Parra in 2009 -But what a miracle that would take.

Bellamy correctly identified that Maranta's "safe" takes against Penrith (I think it was Penrith) were almost totally uncontested. That's why he sent through the troops to follow up Cronk's pin point bombs - and the rest is history - as should be Maranta's first grade career.

Lucky for Maranta Hodges is not playing so he cant give him a spray.

This is a cripple fight game.

Hook has dished is up Lowrie and Maranta basically all effing yr. This season has been a complete waste with all the close loses and inept performance vs Sharks

Our forward pack is gonna get run over IMO. Don't think they will beat us by much but the size they have in the forwards will be to much for our pack.

That was my first thought when I saw the pack the Bulldogs named this week. Unless Gillett and Thaiday come back to any reasonable form in this game, then we're going to get steamrolled up the middle.

There must be some clause in the Broncos charter that states :
Anyone with the surname Maranta who wishes to play for the Broncos must play a minimum of 30 games
Or some shit like that

Say what you want to say about Maranta's performance against the Storm, but his performance against the Warriors was quality and any other player in his position would have cost Brisbane that game. Heck, they already have, twice this season.

I don't think he deserved to get selected here but I'm tired of fans turning a blind eye to any and all positives just so they can rag on the players.

He caught the ball Pete. That's all he did. He completed the basics of the game.

I would expect that our wingers would complete the basics PLUS add attacking value.

As mentioned Bellamy, who is a very smart coach, would have looked at the Warriors game and recognised Maranta performed admirably without any pressure being applied, and developed a successful game plan - bodies coming through and getting in his face.

As a long time supporter, I am disappointed at having Maranta as a winger where once stood Michael Hancock, Willie Carne, Wendall Sailor and Lote Tiquiri.

From the looks and sprays I've seen come from Justin Hodges, it seems I'm not the only one who things this.

I have no idea what game you were watching but Maranta was under a lot of pressure in that Warriors game from Vatuvei.

He stood up.

Downplaying his work under the high ball is ridiculous. Tell you what, wish the likes of Copley, Barba & Vidot could catch - we'd have three less losses on our record right there.

I don't think you can lump Barba in there. He has copped his fair share of criticism too.

Copley was made to play out of position, his job shouldn't be to catch bombs.

So the only fair comparison is Vidot. And he offers so much more to help out our forward pack, that we have no choice but to gamble with his selection.

I agree with you to some extent BP, Maranta has probably copped a bit more flack then he has deserved, considering his season overall. But then I think you might be a bit too gentle? The reality is we cannot settle for average, or even slightly above average, if you want to win NRL games. That has been one of Hook's biggest problems, seemingly settling for mediocrity.

Maranta hasn't had enough game breakers to warrant having a shocker. Sure this is bad luck for him, but that's the business of professional sport (and even life in general from what I am experiencing at work at the moment!!)
