Well another round looms and the race to the finals heats up with alot of action going in this week inside the top 8.
Friday Night match
Newcastle Knights V St George-Illawarra Dragonsat Marathon Stadium
Knights: Robbie O'Davis, Darren Albert, Matthew Gidley, Timana Tahu, Adam MacDougall, Kurt Gidley, James Wayne, Steve Simpson, John Morris, Matt Parsons, Ben Kennedy (c), Julian Bailey, Daniel Abraham. Res: Paul Marquet, Troy Fletcher, Sean Rudder, Josh Perry, Mark Huges (one to be omitted).
Dragons: Amos Roberts, Nathan Blacklock, Mark Gasnier, Paul McGregor, Jamie Ainscough, Trent Barrett, Jason Hooper, *Craig Smith (c), Mark Riddell, Jason Ryles, Darren Treacy, Lance Thompson, Andrew Hart. Res: Chris Leikvoll, Colin Ward, Ben Hornby, Wayne Bartrim.
* Dragons official site yet to name replacement.
Referee: Bill Harrigan
Many would like to right off a Knights side without Johns at first glance, especially against a Dragons side that left a Broncos side dead and burried the previous week. I still think the Dragons are the clear favourites and will come away with victory but they haven't been a safe bet all year. They have been up and down like a yoyo and with Craig Smiths suspension this week could be spell another downer for the Dragons.
My Pick: Dragons by 4
Saturday Matches
New Zealand Warriors V Sydney Roosters at Ericsson Stadium
Warriors: Ivan Cleary, Henry Faáfili, Wairangi Koopu, Clinton Toopi, Francis Meli, Motu Tony, Stacey Jones (c), Jerry SeuSeu, Monty Betham, Mark Tookey, Ali Lauititi, Awen Guttenbeil, Kevin Campion (c). Res: Nathan Wood, Richard Villasanti, David Myles, Shontayne Hape, Jason Death (one to me omitted).
Roosters: Luke Phillips, Chris Flannery, Shannon Hegarty, Matt Sing, Anthony Minichello, Brad Fittler (c), Craig Wing, Peter Cusack, Simon Bonetti, Andrew Lomu, Michael Crocker, Craig Fitzgibbon, Luke Ricketson. Res: Dallas Hood, Dean Widders, Bryan Fletcher, Albert Talipeau, Adrian Morley (one to be admitted).
Referee: Tim Mander
This is the Warriors chance to really stamp their authority on that 8th spot leading into the last two rounds. Although at long odds they have the chance to move into 6th at the end of the weekend, they could effectively hold onto that position for the rest of the round robin. Also a win keeps them 2 points clear of the Eagles and 3 clear of the Storm.
On the Roosters side, they need to win to keep in 6th position and remain a force for the up coming finals series. If they lose this match they could come dangerously close to bombing out of the 8 come round 26.
This match is very evenly scaled and the NZ TAB have the 2 teams unseperatable. This match will be tough but i feel the Warriors can match the Roosters pack and have the backs to walk all over the Roosters. The last time the two sides met it was a flashy points scoring afair, i don't feel this match will follow the same path.
My Pick: Warriors by 2
Parramatta Eels V Wests Tigers at Parramatta Stadium
Eels: Brett Hodgson, Scott Donald, Jamie Lyon, David Vealiki, Jason Moodie, Michael Buettner, PJ Marsh, Nathan Cayless, Brad Drew, Michael Vella, Ian Hindmarsh, Nathan Hindmarh, Daniel Wagon. Res: Daniel Irvine, Andrew Ryan, Jason Cayless, David Solomona, Luke Burt (one to be omitted).
Tigers: Joel Caine, Lipina Kaufusi, Kevin McGuinness, Terry Hill, John Carlaw, Owen Craigie, Ben Jeffries, John Skandalis, Ciriaco Mescia, Corey Pearson, Darren Senter (c), Luke O'Donnell, Ben Galea. Res: Willie Manu, Steve Crouch, Mark O'Niell, Shane Walker, Tyran Smith, Mark O'Halloran (two to be omitted).
Referee: Sean Hampstead
Well the Eels just keep marching on and last week they got just the test they needed before the finals against the Bulldogs. The Tigers had the second best comeback in NRL history so their no slouches either going into this game. The Tigers know their season hangs on every match now. They can still make the finals and they won't just let Parramatta walk all over them. Expect a tough physical match but the Eels to get home comfortably.
My Pick: Eels by 12
Canterbury Bulldogs V North Queensland Cowboys at Sydney Showground
Bulldogs: Luke Pattern, Hazem El Masri, Nigel Vagana, Willie Talau, Shane Marteene, Braith Anasta, Darrell Tindall, Darren Britt (c), Craig Polla-mounter, Steven Price, Steve Reardon, Willie Mason, Darren Smith. Res: Jamie Feeney, Glen Hughes, Dennis Scott, Brent Sherwin.
Cowboys: Matthew Bowen, Adam Connelly, Josh Hannay, Paul Bowman (c), Brian Jellick, Julian O'Niell, Nathan Fien, Tim Maddison, George Gatis, Jamie McDonald, Michael Luck, Peter Jones, Glenn Morrisson. Res: Chris Sheppard, Kyle Warren, Robert Relf, Daniel Strcikland, Shaun Valentine (one to be omitted).
Referee: Mark Oaten
The Bulldogs should carry on their winning ways at the Showgrounds this week and put the memories of last weeks loss well behind them. Don't underestimate the Cowboys though, they can see that wooden spoon creeping up on them and won't go down with out and almight fight.
My Pick: Bulldogs by 16
Sunday Matches
Cronulla Sharks V Brisbane Broncos at Toyota Park
Sharks: David Peachey (c), Mat Rogers, Paul Mellor, Chris McKenna, Colin Best, Adam Dykes, Preston Campell, Jason Stevens, Jason Ferris, Martin Lang, Nathan Long, Sean Ryan, Nick Graham. Res: Paul McNicholas, Andrew Pierce, Dean Treister, Luke Stuart.
Broncos: Darren Lockyer (c), Lote Tuqiri, Stuart Kelly, Michael De Vere, Wendell Sailor, Ashley Harrison, Shaun Berrigan, Shane Webcke, Luke Priddis, Petro Civoniceva, Bradley Meyers, Dane Carlaw, Darren Burns. Res: Carl Webb, Corey Parker, Shane Walker, Damon Keating, Casey McGuire, Brent Tate (two to be omitted).
Referee: Paul Simpkins
Well what a match this is going to be. As Cryptic said, its do or die for the Broncos. If they win this match they could see themselves sitting in 3rd and gain back alot of confidence after 4 straight losses. Walters is out after the infamous Smith incident last week and Priddis is in doubt after being admitted to hospital this week. Other than that its a very strong Brisbane outfit.
The Sharks welcome back Peachey and Dykes who were sorely missed in last weeks thrashing at the hands of the Warriors. The Sharks are back home and will be a totally different side. They have always shown confidence and belief in themselves against the Broncos and this match will be no different. Its a cliff hangers and whoever losses could see themselves slip out of the premiership race.
My Pick: Broncos by 4
Canberra Raiders V Northern Eagles at Bruce Stadium
Raiders: Clinton Schifcosfske, Odell Manuel, Joel Monaghan, Greg Wolfgramm, Michael Robertson, Brett Finch, Michael Monaghan, Luke Davico, Simon Wollford (c), Sean Rutgerson, Ruben Wiki, Anthony Colella, Alan Tongue. Res: Terry Martin, Adam Peters, Ryan O'Hara, Darren Mapp, Ken Nagas (one o be omitted).
Eagles: Brendon Reeves, John Hopoate, Andrew King, Christian Hill, Scott McLean, Ben Walker, Brett Kimmorley, Steve Trindall, Geoff Toovey (c), Mark O'Meley, Phil Bailey, Adam Muir, Jan Bandy. Res: Shayne Dunley, Tony Jensen, Scott Asimus, Wayne Evans, Scott Pethybridge (one to be omitted).
Referee: Tony Archer
Well this is shaping up to be quite a good battle at the Bruce. The Raiders have to eventually slip out of this slump.........don't they? The Eagles aren't exactly running hot after the draw to the Cowboys but they still have the top 8 in sight and can't afford to have a lapse against a team that they should beat.
My Pick: Eagles by 6
Melbourne Storm V Penrith Panthers at Colonial Stadium
Storm: Robbie Ross, Fifita Moala, Aaron Moule, Steven Bell, Marcus Bai, Matt Geyer, Matt Orford, Robbie Kearns (c), Richard Swain, Rodney Howe, Matt Rua, Stephen Kearney, Danny Williams. Res: Tasesa Lavea, Peter Robinson, Russell Bawden, Ben Roarty.
Panthers: Brett Atkinson, Matthew Rieck, Andrew Hinson, Chris Hicks, Martin O'Connell, Steve Carter (c), Craig Greenhill, Craig Gower, Frank Puletua, Tony Puletua, Matt Adamson, Scott Sattler, Ben Reynolds. Res: Carl MacNamara, John Cross, Ned Catic (one to be added).
Referee: Steven Clark
The Storm like other teams have their eyes firmly set on that last top 8 spot. They will face a fired up Panthers who have their attention of the battle for the spoon, they know they have to pick up a win in their last 3 games to get off the bottom. The Storm look too strong even after their last two games. They keep with the Roosters for 60 mins last week, this week they should stay with the Panthers for the full 80.
My Pick: Storm by 14
Well theres my drawn out look at things. If your reading this you have managed to stay awake.
